After spending a few nights in Ubud seeing monkey sanctuaries', rice fields and mountains we decided to go to Gili Trawangan. Gili T is known for its tropical beaches, surf and parties so we thought why not give it a go? When we arrived we checked into our accommodation that only had very basic facilities. However, it was cheap and we did get a free banana pancake everyday for breakfast.
On Gili T there are no motorized vehicles so the only way you can get around is by bicycle or by jumping on a horse and carriage. So on the first day we decided to hire bikes and ride around the island. The place itself is lovely but it is definitely a tourist destination. There are bars and restaurants located all around the island screaming out for foreigners to come and spend money. Infact, they want to sell you anything.. Owen got asked if he wanted to buy some ice (P) by a waiter whilst we were having lunch one day!
As much as it is touristy there is a very strong feel for the Muslim religion. Five times a day we would hear a voice over a microphone praying and singing. This would often be our wake up call at five in the morning!
The next day Owen tried to learn how to surf. As per normal he picked it up very quickly and was able to get himself up on the waves. Later that night we decided to bike around the island to watch the sunset. Although it was cloudy it was still very pretty over the ocean. After a couple of Bintangs (local beer = $3 660mls) we started chatting to a german guy called Daniel. The three of us decided to ride to the next pub. There we met some aussies and they asked about what happened to my arm. We made out that I was attacked my a crocodile in Australia. It was so funny! They totally believed us and even took photos. I bet they have rehearsed the story to their family and friends back home. They kept saying "i have never meet someone who was attacked by a croc" haha.
The next day we went snorkelling around the gili islands on a glass bottom boat. It was awesome and so cheap. We paid $200,000Rup which equals $10 each.
Gilli T is definitly a place to go and chill out!! Next stop Lombok, where we climbed to the top of Mount doom.
