Today we ventured to Isla del Sol for the day. The largest island on Lake Titicaca with spectacular views and of course lots of sunshine!
We arrived on the island after a very tedious boat journey, the slowest boat I have every been on. To get anywhere on the island we had to climb some really steep Inca steps. Still not used to the altitude so this was exhausting.
Our first mission of the day was to find breakfast. Every restaurant we went into either had nothing or a cheese sandwich. We finally found a place at the top of the hill and settled down to an American breakfast. It took them so long I think they went looking for the chicken and its eggs.
Today was Simons birthday. Nicola and I went shopping the previous day for birthday presents. We weren't so successful. We bought him a colourful garland the locals use to bless their cars. Therfore all day the locals found it hilarious that he was wearing it. We also bought him a woolen llama finger puppet. Amazingly he was chuffed with his presents and carried his llama around the island with pride.
Later we realised why no one was cooking breakfast. There was a huge festival at the church, the whole village was involved. They started letting off fireworks dangerously close to everyone, scary!
Isla del Sol has numerous Inca ruins so we went in search of them. We walked miles up and down the island to find out the ruins were the wall we kept on sitting on for a break. We were not impressed and also felt very stupid. However, we did walk to the bottom of the island and found an interesting ruin. This kept us entertained.
Boat back was just as tedious. Aidan fell asleep and almost fell off his bench. He woke up and didn't have a clue where he was.
Sat and watched the sunset over Lake Titicaca with some wine and several boxes of Pringles.
In the evening we went out for a slap up meal at our hotel. We had chocolate fondue for desert, which was amazing! Bought the birthday boy lots of drinks but unfortunately the pubs here shut at midnight. Went back to a hostel for a party with some Eton boys and Irish folks.
Aidan.
