Well me and brett left Ko Sumui to head to Bangkok to get to Chaing Mai. After a sleepless night on the toilet I wasn't feeling too great and we had a long journey ahead of us. I ate nothing that day and we finally made it on to the overnight train 6 hrs after setting off. Well the train was pretty impressive. We had top bunks as they are cheaper and this bit just dropped down to turn into beds. I had a Thai girl below me who was keen to pratice her English but I wasn't much in the mood and got the bed down at 8pm. Well was a fun night it was going up and down that ladder to race to the toilet. Needless to say I had no sleep and was in agony for most of the time. I actually sat on the toilet and threw up at the same time which was certainly an experience. The poor girl below me didn't talk to me the next morning as every time I went up and down I flapped her curtain and probably woke her up. We arrived at Bangkok station at 6am and had to sit there for 2 hrs before we thought there was any hope we could check into the hostel. In this time I went to the pharmacy and got some tablets which I took and then promptly threw up in a plastic bag with holes in it completely whole in front of a couple of hundred people! Well after a few more plastic bag episodes and a taxi ride we made it to the hostel but couldn't check in til 12 so we went to sit at a French cafe down the road.
Well the next 3 days were spent on the toilet and in bed, luckily we had an ensuite! Feeling a little better though not going to make it to Chaing Mai I ventured out and we were staying right in the heart of the red light district!!! We went to a cafe and were served by a lady boy who was not a very convincing one and had a look around the markets. We went to Lumphini Park which was really nice like a little bubble of tranquility amongst the smog of the city. We also had a massive storm with thunder that sounded like buildings were falling down and lightening that hurt your eyes. The rain flooded the street to about a foot deep in the 1st ten mins. It was amazing, so exciting and refreshing.
On another day we went to the Royal District and saw the Palace where their beloved King goes sometimes. The Palace grounds was very impressive, there are loads of buildings all with gold around them and a temple that is huge. The boat ride along the river to get there was good although the water there is absolutely disgusting and we saw one person washing in it! We hired a tuk tuk for 4 hrs and went around he city for 20p each! He took us to the lucky Buddha and the reclining Buddha which is Huge and made of gold. We also went to 2 tailors and we each got measured for suits! We went to a jewellry place and a market, and it was a really good way to see the city though it was sometimes petrifying doing u turns down 3 lane one way streets.
Another day we went to Siam and looked around the shopping centres and bought yet more DVDS! We also had our suit fittings where we were driven by a tuk tuk driver who was doing death sefying feats and shrieking and whooping as he did them. We also went to the cinema to see Die Hard 4 and had to stand up for the National Anthem beforehand! It was so cheap and the reclining seats were really comfy with loads of leg room.
We moved to another hostel out of the city for our last 3 nights which cost the same (£6) but was like a palace and should have really called itself a hotel. It had a pool on the roof with really good views and the room was huge with a balcony, satellite tv, a mini fridge and room service!!! Well I've never had room service before and nor had brett so we thought we'd try it out one night. We got a 12 yr old girl knocking on our door half hr later with a plastic bad with our food in takeaway boxes! It was very nice though. We went to a massive market on Sat where they sell literally everything extremely cheaply and we had one last look around the city. There were also some huge storms again.
I really enjoyed Bangkok and even though my stomach is still far from normal and we didn't get to go to Chiang Mai we did Bangkok thoroughly. The smog there is ridiculous and it's so polluted that riding in a tuk tuk makes your eyes water, but it is totally buzzing and there are no rules on the roads! It also makes you realise just how much they love their King. He's celebrating 60 yrs on the throne this year and half teh population have bought yellow t shirts to celebrate, they also have yellow wristbands saying 'long live the king'!
I have really enjoyed Thailand. Travelling from place to place is an absolute nightmare and like the rest of Asia no one seems to have a clue what's going on half the time, but the islands are extremely picturesque and Bangkok is definately worth the while. One day I shall go back and do Bangkok again and Chiang Mai and Phuket and Phi Phi!
