Well we started our day early to go to Fraser Island and had the best tour guide ever- Kel. He had endless enthusiasm and wit- 'any tree is a lavactree' being my favourite. Not that I needed to be told!!! First up after we got off the boat we went in the 4x4 to the other side of teh island which was extremely bumpy. We were literally bouncing out of our seats!!! We got to the other side and went to a shipwreck the Mahino. It's been washed up there and there was amassive sotry that Kel told uis about how it got there, basically a Japanese bloke bought it cheap from NZ saying he wouldnt sail it, then we did so they did somethign to it that would sink it and it washed up and he never made it back to Japan. Then we went to a creek and waded through it. There were 24 of us on the tour which included 4 Dutch farmers and as we were wading through they shouted 'SNAKE' from the bridge above and I nearly crapped myself. Clearly we had some jokers on board. Next we went to Indian Point which was really scenic, we went to the top of the cliffs and saw a tiger shark in the waters below. The views were amazing and the sea so clear. Driving back to the camp that night was interesting as we got stuck in the sand a bit and the waves were washing up against the coach and water was spraying through whichw as quite exciting. We stopped and watche d a humpback whale breaching about 10 times which wqas excellent. i could really appreciate how big it was this time as I saw the whole body and it was the same distance away as a massive ship and a similar size. I alkso saw a dingo on the beach! We went back to the camp which was absolute luxury for us!! It had a BED! Kel cooked us a BBQ dinner and we stayed up chatting to a German couple who were hilarious and looking at the spiders. It was ferezing cold at night but so nice to stretch out. Kel was scaring us all saying normally snakes and spiders only defend themselves but on Fraser Island they attack! Also I head something waslking around our tent at night - probably a dingo!
Next day we went swimming in a lake that had massive catfish in but it was nice not to be swimming in the sea for once!! We also visited massive sand dunes that looked like the desert and then went swimming in another lake and went for a walk around teh rainforest. We also listened to more stories from Kel about why the island is called Fraser Island and about teh old aboriginal settlers some of which are still there.
I really enjoyed Fraser Island, definitely one of the best places I've been so far and I'm glad we did a tour not a self drive as it was nice to have some context to what we were seeing plus I wouldn't have fancied driving in sinking sand much!
