We left Goolwa and drove to Cape Jervis, about 100kms South East of Goolwa. We were one of the first cars in the queue for the Kangaroo Island Sealink Car Ferry Sealion 2000. We check-in, get our boarding tickets, grab some morning tea and wait for the boat to arrive. It's a very windy day with a big swell - it finally comes into sight and is a bit smaller than we imagined it would be. All the vehicles and passengers disembark, and then it's our turn. It apparently fits 55 cars, but we couldn't believe that all the cars in the 4 lanes waiting were actually going to fit on. Then, we realised there was only one way on and off, so the cars had to reverse into the ferry! Only the driver was allowed in the vehicle, so Mum, Eamon & Renee embarked and stood on the back of the ferry watching all the cars go in. Ours was close to the last, as it was the largest. People around us watched and marvelled at the skill of the caravan driver (ie, Dad) to get the van into such a tight space backwards!
The ferry departed on time at Noon, and took about 50 minutes to arrive and Penneshaw - it was a bumpy ride! Last on the ferry meant first off, so we were quick to depart and headed directly west with the first stop Prospect Hill. 512 stairs later and we were at the top - it's a fantastic viewing point of a large part of the island, which is about 155km East to West, and 50km North to South.
Next stop was American River - a nice quiet village with a great eatery called the Oyster Farm Shop - we picked up some fish and oysters and ate them by the waterside where there were black swans and other birds around. We then drove northwards to Kingscote - Mum rang the Medical Centre, and scored a booking for Eamon just as we were approaching - he's had a terrible cough for 2 weeks. The doctor diagnosed a chest infection so he got some antibiotics. We had just enough time then to get to Island Beehive where we watched the Ligurian bees at work, and of course purchased some honey (we had to dispose of our honey before catching the ferry due to the island regulations!).
We ventured further north to Emu Bay for a look. It's a lovely place with a long white sandy beach and a great long jetty and grassy hill - Renee took the opportunity to do a bit of training while we were there!! Time was getting on so we made our way to the Heartland area, and Parndana Caravan Park. We enjoyed a couple of drinks with some friendly neighbours, had a quick game of cricket and a nice dinner in the Parndana Hotel.
