We woke to another sunny day, got the bikes off the car, prepared our camel backs with water and headed to the information centre and onto Goolwa Wharf. We wandered around the very busy markets before beginning our 25km bike ride to Victor Harbor - it's a popular ride on the Fleurieu Peninsula called 'Encounter Bikeway'.
From the Wharf we head to South Goolwa and dropped into a bird-hide which overlooks the Lower River Murray. It's a wooden structure with seats and peeping holes designed for bird watching - we sat and listened to some very nice sounding birds (although we couldn't spot them!). Then it was onto Middleton where there are some great beaches, and Port Elliot with its lovely Horseshoe Bay - kids were enjoying jumping off the jetty there. The ride is a combination of Onroad and Shared Paths - it's pretty safe. There's also lots of variety - sometimes you're right beside the beach, other times beside the railway, and other times across some hay plains.
We continued on from Port Elliot, and spotted the steam train coming back from Victor Harbour at one stage, and could often hear it tooting. We made it to Victor Harbor mid afternoon and had a nice lunch at the Hotel Victor. We wanted to catch The Cockle Train back to Goolwa, so jumped on the 3.45pm steam train with our bikes. It was great - everyone along the entire route waved to us on the train - people in cars, on the beach, in their holiday homes, from backyards, on bikes.
We arrived back at Goolwa quite tired from a long day of riding, but we enjoyed every bit of it!
