Nervous Turkey!
Until 3.30am, and the other guy in our room about 4am. This was when the loudest snoring exhibition started between these two old, plump Malaysian guys laid on their backs, in this 6ft x 9ft box. We spent hours listening to the roars of the beasts till it was a reasonable time to go out. We kindly asserted to the humorous hostel owners that if we couldn't change rooms or upgrade to a private double we would be swiftly making our exit. It is a really hard situation to deal with as of course people snore and they don't know the majority of the time but why should the non-snoring population suffer and not get any sleep. We paid the same price for that bed as them, apart from we didn't sleep and they did and it is so frustrating. Put all the loud snorers together we say! Let them have each other and admit what they are..... Sleep Nazis. The owners kindly offered us a dorm to ourselves for tonight.
With a packed itinerary we got the bus to Sentosa Island....after being walked to the bus stop by the parent like hostel owner. Sentosa is a bizarre place. A complete island just off of Singapore that is a theme park/entertainment haven. It is the best developed island we have come across and everything was immaculate. It has a Universal Studios, Segway tracks, Beaches, Trick Museums, Sky Tower, Golf Course, Cinema, Bungee, Sky Cars, Street Luge and much more. The scale of it is insane. Unfortunately, we weren't interested in taking part in any of that over priced consumerism but we throughly enjoyed looking at what was on offer, it was awesome. We then chilled on the beach then had a smoothie until it became a decent enough climate to even attempt walking around the city.
We ate on the bustling china town food street (it tasted like Halton's Hong Kong Express) but the main activity of the night was the slight lapse of our month long sobriety to visit the Raffles Hotel for an original Singapore Sling. To get there we took the tourist walk of Marina Bay as the sunset and on the way we had planned to go to Altitude1, a popular $30 a head roof top lookout across the city. We couldn't find it though as we had been given the wrong directions but we did find the One Asia bar. An equivalent high end restaurant/bar at 71 floors high near Raffles. After Matt being judged on his casual dress code but being accepted we headed up to the viewing platform where we could enjoy the scenery for 20 minutes before the bar opened. In true backpacker style we got the photos and saw the spectacular views then sloped off dodging the $60 entrance bullet. The famous Long Bar at Raffles did not disappoint with its quirky/cool as interior and atmosphere. On entry we were given the 'Sling' menu and guided to our table to devour a huge bag of monkey nuts. We ordered two classic slings and proceeded to throw the abandoned nut shells on the floor. This is the only place in Singapore where you can litter and this is how they encourage it. Therefore the floor of the bar is a carpet of walked on nut cases. It is fair to say that the $74 round was worth it, the cocktails and the atmosphere was amazing (and just for the record this is more than we paid for our room tonight). We also couldn't of looked that shabby because some backpackers don't get let in...... (Sig and Vic).
On the return walk around the marina we got to witness the vibrant Friday night happenings of Singapore and capture it in the best photographs we have taken yet.
Singapore is city heaven and at a point when we were 'city'd out' it has refreshed us, we loved it!
