Another great day in Belize.
It was quite cool here this morning. . . Only 63F. OK I know that's not cool for most of you in the winter but it did feel cool to us.
It was a clear morning, which is very nice here, there was a nice mist over the river.
Two more couples arrived at the resort yesterday, so we split into 2 groups for our adventure today. We took a trip on the "jungle buggy" to a property in the hills. It was a rough ride, but nice nonetheless. When we arrived we had to hike up into the forest for about 20 minutes, mostly uphill to get to where we headed. William our guide was extremely knowledgeable and taught us a lot about the forest. He showed us some unique vegetation and some interesting creatures, including a tarantula.
Our destination was a cave that William discovered when he was a teenager by accident. It turned out to be a unique Mayan find, now called the Chechem Ha caves. The caves are in 9 levels. Some of the levels have pots or pottery fragments dating from about 500 bc to 700 ad. And before William found it, the cave had been sealed up by the Mayans.
We needed headlamps to wander through the caves since they are not lighted at all. Quite a journey travelling through the caves.
Very fascinating to see the archeological site which is largely untouched but still open which makes ir possible to see these ancient Mayan relics close up. Quite a unique experience to visit this find, with the person who uncovered it as our guide! The photo I've shared is the main pot chamber at about level five.
After walking out of the cave and back down the hill, we caught up with the second tour group for lunch when we left, they headed out on their adventure.
Highly recommended adventure!!
The bulk of the afternoon when we returned to the resort was quiet and peaceful. That was good since Monday I am headed to Tikal Mayan ruins in Guatemala, and I leave early for the full day trip. I'm lucky enough to be alone with a "personalguide
Over and out for now!
