After moving all my luggage across town to another hostel, due to bookings, I took a quick walk around the Queen Victoria market and then got picked up just before 2pm. It was time to take a trip to Phillip Island and see the Penguins!!
First stop was a wildlife sanctuary that held a collection of Australia's native wildlife including birds, koalas, kangaroos and wallabies. I got to feed both kangaroos and wallabies (wallabies are much cuter). Only to find, when I got back on the bus, that I'd managed to not only step in poo, but also got it on my camera bag, which incidentally had transferred it to the top of my jeans....b*****!
We stopped at a chocolate factory as we arrive on Phillip Island and then stopped for dinner and look at a colony of Australian fur seals (a colony of 35,000-45,000). Final stop - penguins! We arrived at the lookout around 8:15, sat by the beach on the lookout steps and watched the penguins make their way to shore as the sun set. Unfortunately the weather was not on our side; it was cold rainy and overcast....oh yeah and I left my raincoat on the bus...great.
Nevertheless, it was great watching them come in and waddle their way up to their burrows, where in a lot of cases there were hungry chicks waiting to be fed. You could hear them calling out to each other as they were greeted by their parents. I took great delight in watching them waddle their way up the bank and by the side of the walkway we were on. It was quite amusing. The only downside was that we weren't allowed to take photos :-(
