I was relieved to arrive in Auckland after the plane had been delayed. As I arrived so late I couldn't get the bus into the city centre, instead Keighley and Sarah surprised me and met me at the airport!
Monday was an early start. We took the ferry from Devonport (north Auckland) to Rangitoto, a dormant volcano near the city for a hike up and down it. The round trip took just under 3 hours, with a short break at the top to take in the amazing views. Having worked up an appetite we took the ferry into the city centre and had lunch in the revolving restaurant at the top of the Sky Tower (the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere, so Keighley tells me). Despite them forgetting Keighley's meal in the order, it was great! We got a great view of the city and ate some delicious food. After a little walk around Auckland we had some ice cream and then onto the Waterfront for some drinks in happy hour.
Tuesday, Sarah left for the South Island. After collecting essentials in Auckland we had lunch back at the house and then headed West, by car, to Piha. It's a volcanic beach, with beautiful surrounding countryside. Finally back at the house in the evening, we were treated to a lamb roast, courtesy of Brett, including homemade dessert.
Despite only being in Auckland for a couple of days it was great to catch up with Keighley and see the sights in such a short space of time.
