Graham met another trathlete on the campsite and they decided to travel on the 7.30 bus into Geneva. An early start with number tattoos applied , sun cream on and pre race breakfast. I delivered them to the bus stop and went back to see if there was any other signs of life at base camp. Slowly the campers emerged and prepared themselves for the day ahead in the hot sun, We failed to get to the bus stop by 10am as planned so had to wait another half ann hour. The 5 Team Le Good supporters were the only ones on the bus, but the driver wouldn't except payment and directed us to the on board machine which only took coins, of which we had only a few.The driver really didn't seem that bothered but eventually we found enough coins to buy 5 tickets costing 3 Swiss franc when we should have paid 10 francs each, so that was a good deal.
We arrived by 11.30 the bus journey quite long and tiresome but better than driving. Luckily we found Graham easily going through his pre race rituals( which means multiple visits to the toilet) It was soon time to put on the wet suit and join the other GB old boys. Although all competitors there is a commaradery between the group of about 10 "old boys" which were the last wave to go off.
They paraded from their pen to the start line and into the beautiful clear water of Lake Geneva. 5,4,3,2,1, and they are off. Graham is out in front , well it could be him with everyone in black wetsuits and white swimming hats it's difficult to spot anyone,
So we dash to the swim exit and 16 minutes later he runs up the ramp well up in his group.
Now three laps of the bike course he acknowledges his support crew's cheers, five noisey supporters with Union Jack waving , no wonder he is going well. On to the run its now a breeze for Graham who runs past the faster cyclists into the home straight . 2nd GB 9th overall awesome.
After a celebratory drink we made our way back to the bus stop and managed to buy some tickets this time. The younger generation slept the whole journey , anyone would have thought they had done a triathlon. We stocked up at the supermarket with BBQ food and more beer, before returning back to base camp.
As usual Duncan was in charge of an excellent BBQ and I wrongly thought we had bought too much food and drink. Evening games ended a very successful day .
