Such bad nights sleep! We didn't get to bed until late anyway, but then at about 7am we could just here loads of building work going on. Sounded like they were going to come through our wall, so annoying!
We went downstairs and complained anyway, and it was actually the manager we spoke to. I asked to be moved rooms, and he said sorry and moved us one room on. Don't think it'll actually be that much better but at least it's away from the building work next door...it's just everything that's going on at the front. Suppose it's not his fault though. Couldn't be bothered moving guesthouse either!
Had a nice breakfast this though. We had no idea what we was getting, just sat down and the manager asked if we wanted coffee or tea. 10 minutes later an omelette each came with a little bit of salad and also some veg like broccoli (?), then some toast and jam. Really nice and included in the room rate.
After breakfast we took a walk to see what we could find. Took about 15 minutes and we got to a big indoor and outdoor shopping mall. Had a walk around there for a while. I had to get some new earphones because mine had broken!!
We had a look for food too, but it's a lot more expensive than anywhere else we've been so far. Even Subway is more expensive than home! That's the first time any food has been more expensive than home. We shared a foot-long sub of the day from Subway - it was the cheapest thing to eat at 169 Baht (£3.40). Healthier too.
We'd been told by Gaynor about an ice-cream place called Swensens and how nice it is...found one! So we had an ice-cream each too and it's pretty damn good. Saw Haagen-Dazs too...£3 for one scoop!
We found Bangla Rd that we'd heared is the main road in Patong so went for a walk down there. Well, it's pretty awful. It's crammed with bars and just looks really scruffy! No wonder people have been telling us to get out of Phuket asap. Then we got to Patong beach, which was quite busy considering it wasn't sunny today, it's just been cloudy and humid. It must get overcrowded on there, but bet it looks nicer in the sun.
First impressions were not good at all! But we thought we'd give it chance and see what it's like at night.
We've decided to stay in Phuket another night otherwise we'd be going to Phi Phi tomorrow and would have to be up early for the ferry really and don't fancy doing it with a hangover. Not only that, the accommodation is really expensive in Phi Phi and it's cheaper to go the day after tomorrow. So we've booked into an air conditioned bungalow at P.P. Casita for £33 a night. The place has been recommended by two sets of travelling friends too. It's expensive compared to what we've been paying elsewhere though.
So we've also booked into our current place, At Home Guesthouse, for another night. I asked the manager how much it would be for another night, and he just said best price for you is 800 Baht (£16)....that's 400 Baht less than we are paying per night already!! I've chatted to him a couple of times today about football and stuff, plus we complained about the noise, so maybe that's why. It'll do for us though!
We got ourselves back out again at about 7pm, ready to see the Patong nightlife. Well, it totally changes at night. Bangla road is closed off to traffic and it's absolutely heaving. There's so many bars it's ridiculous. They're all sort of open air bars and there's lots of bar girls trying to get you in with different special offers. We were on a mission to get some tea first anyway.
We found an italian place and shared salad and pizza. Was pretty much the cheapest place we could find but still wasn't that cheap really.
Time for a few drinks. We walked back onto Bangla road and went into a bar that had a band on and a drinks promo. Buy one get one free on cocktails...then we realised it was still £6 for the two! But even beers were only slightly cheaper. Must have picked the most expensive bar! At least the band were pretty good.
It does kind of look better on a night, it's got a good atmosphere and there are loads of people. And there's lots of girly-boy bars too, dancing in bars above, and down the middle of side-streets with bars either side. Then there's the cabaret girls out...obviously girly-boys.
We sat in a place called Kangaroo Bar on the main street. It's open air and a good spot for people watching. Ended up sharing a table with an Australian couple and the girl's mum. They'd come on a 2 and a half week holiday..........
The girl was a bit of an odd ball, but the lad was alright. He was telling me about a few things and about a game he played the other night with the bar girls. It's where you have a big block of wood and a nail each. Everybody takes it in turns to hammer the nail in with one hit at a time. Whoever nails it in first wins. I've played it before - good game but much harder than it sounds or looks. He lost to the bar girl. Don't know how much, but apparently the bar girls pretty much always win. I won't be playing any of those games!
We decided it was time to go down one of the girly-boy streets - Crocodile Soi. Found a bar and a seat just off the front part but with a good view - didn't want to be too close. There's bars on either side of the narrow street, then a long bar in the middle with podiums and poles for the dancers. It was one of the funniest things we've ever watched. Dancing around in big high heels and some of the worst plastic surgery you've ever seen. Some of them really do look like girls though. We'd say yeah, that's definitely a girl, then we'd look at her (his?) feet...massive man feet. It's weird. Then there's the ones that you can tell are a man but some of them are hilarious to watch. They're looking in the mirror all the time as well and do all these female expressions.
There was a few times during the night where I went to the toilet, I was stood at the urinals and I could hear high heels walking past...
Getting to the toilet was an ordeal in itself. If you're a man walking around on your own, you get hounded. Bar girls and girly-boys saying Oooh-la-la and Oooh, young man etc, and grabbing my arm. They're funny about it though. Still turns my stomach.
Therese went to the toilet at one point and I was sat on my own. Out the corner of my eye I could see someone waving at me. I looked and it was this girly-boy who we'd already said was really comical to watch. Looked very manly. He/She was pointing to where Therese was sat, then saying "shhh" with his/her finger to his/her lips then doing the phone gesture with his/her hand to his/her ear saying call me with a big grin, and shrugging one shoulder trying to look "cute". Well I just wet myself laughing. He/she was laughing too but every time I looked her way he/she kept doing it. It was really funny because he/she just kept doing these really feminine things like waving his/her long (extension) hair back and forth and winking at me.
Then Therese came back and he/she was halfway through doing the "call me" one...he/she saw Therese and looked away and covered her face. Then he/she would keep turning around to see if Therese wasn't looking and kept saying call me etc and laughing and winking. I was just wetting myself laughing.
We ended up getting a photo with another of the funny ones. He/she got her peck implants out for it too... Cost 100 Baht (£2)! Funny picture though.
I got some pictures and video which is better to watch. Shame I can't get the videos I've taken onto the Internet!
Therese made a mate - a normal female barmaid actually, called Mimi. We got some info from her about where to go and how much to pay which was useful.
We were trying to find a club but the one we found had more people coming out than going in so didn't bother. Then we went to find a ping pong show, but the touts were trying to rip us off. We eventually spoke to this guy who had a bar and he told us where to go to get in without a tout. We found the area, but it was a bit late so didn't bother. Pretty dodgy places as well those. The Australian couple we were talking to told us that they went into one and got charged 400 Baht (£8) entry each, then they were being forced to buy a drink at 900 Baht (£18) each!! They had to walk out but they were getting harassed trying to get out too.
We settled on getting a late night snack instead!
5am by the time we got back to our guesthouse...
