Alarm went off at 9.30am - knackered!!
Today we had to change hotel though, because we join our Gap Adventures tour taking us to Cambodia and Vietnam. We had to do some packing and be out by 11am - not what you need after a heavy night out. Once we checked out, we had a few things to do on the computer and then went for some breakfast (left our bags there though!).
We had to get the subway to our new hotel but it was a fairly long walk to the subway. Not what Therese wanted, or me actually especially in the heat and with a hangover...and annoying when the elevator isn't working meaning a long walk up the stairs out of the subway.
It had just started raining when we arrived at the hotel so we took the opportunity to have a nap and do some other chores. Felt like an unproductive day but we needed the rest and it was raining anyway. I needed to wash a couple of t-shirts too - I had to use the hair dryer to dry them as well! You sweat so much so can't really wear a top more than once - think I'll probably have to in Cambodia and Vietnam.
By the time we had our nap and got sorted it was 6pm and time to meet our new group and tour leader. There's 2 people from Belgium, guy and a girl (guy living in London for past 5 years), girl from Switzerland, couple from Ireland (on honeymoon!) and a girl from Venezuela, although these last 3 had not arrived yet.
The girl from Belgium got scammed today. She went out to do some sightseeing and just outside the hotel, she bumped into a Thai woman who was also doing some sightseeing and suggested they share a taxi. The woman took her to a small boat, they went around the river for an hour and then arrives at the Grand Palace. She was then charged $250 (US Dollars)!! It shouldn't have even cost her $25, never mind $250! Lots of people in these countries trying to trick and scam tourists though.
After filling out some forms and getting a briefing of our tour, our tour leader took us out for some food near Khaosan Road. It was really cheap there - 2 meals, a large beer and a bottle of water for 250 Baht (£5). The food was good, but again nowhere near as good as the street food we ate - not much veg in there.
Afterwards, me and Therese and the two Belgians stayed out a little longer. We wanted to try the pancakes from the street stall. We had chocolate and banana. Really nice - bit different to what our pancakes are like. Was only 25 Baht too (50p).
We went for a walk down Khaosan Road because I wanted to find a couple of t-shirts (the Regatta ones I got from Go Outdoors were crap and went all bobbly after only wearing them a few times...suppose that's what you get when they only cost £5!).
As we were walking up the street a guy was trying to get us into the fish tanks...it's where you stick your feet in and the little fish eat all the dry skin off your feet and legs! The guy grabbed us and said come try...he shoved Therese's arm in a bucket to clean her arm and then straight into the tank. She was cringing as all the fish started swarming around her arm and sucking at her skin - got a photo of Therese doing that. She finished and then he grabbed me and I had a go. Was a weird kind of ticklish feeling. Can't remember what the fish are called but they are supposed to help people with skin conditions. We were going to have a proper go but Therese had ankle pants on, so we'll try it somewhere else.
I got myself an obligatory Chang Beer vest top (should have gone to the gym more before travelling). Everybody seems to buy them and I'm a sheep...
A funny thing we saw was 6 people getting out of a tuk-tuk...if you don't know how big they are, have a look for some pictures on google - they seat 3 at a push!
Got back a bit later than we should have, about 11.15pm and tomorrow we have to be checked out at 7am! Plus we stayed up for a while watching the light show...pretty bad thunder and lightening, then a massive down pour. We could see it in the distance slowly approaching us.
Looking forward to Cambodia...
