We got up late this morning with a sore head from last night. I had a sore neck too! Bloody massage guy!
The receptionist in the hotel recommended we visit the Chatuchak Weekend Market, so we made our way to the subway station. It was red hot today - humidity and sunshine. We were really sweating by the time we got to the station! It was quite a long way to the market, but we were glad to have air con for a bit. It cost 40 Baht (80p) to get there which works out more than double the cost in China - still very cheap though.
We arrived at the market straight into the hustle and bustle and the blazing heat. First thing we saw was homemade coconut ice-cream. It was served in a fresh coconut shell and we got a cup of coconut milk. It was lovely, although Therese wasn't keen on the milk.
We were surprised how many ice-cream and confectionary stalls there were, all homemade stuff. Looked really nice, not like Beijing were there is a scorpion wriggling around on a skewer.
We didn't realize how huge the market was going to be. There's some really good arts and crafts type stalls, food, clothing, pretty much anything you can think of. We didn't see much electronics although we didn't get around all the market. There's lots of little passage ways off here and there. Very different market compared to what we've been to in China. China is more about getting all the fake clothes and bags etc.
We walked around loads and then sat and shared some food in the food court type area. They cook it all right there and you can see them throwing everything fresh into the wok. We had the national dish, Pad Thai. Turnsole was so good, and we really enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of these outdoor food places.
We had to hunt a small make-up bag down for Therese (one of her nail varnish things broke and leaked in her other bag) which took a while to find. After she bought it, we were walking back to the station and saw another bag for a fifth of the price - typical.
We were about to set off back to the hotel, but decided to go have a foot massage - I'm not really into that but Therese wanted one and my feet were killing. 150 Baht (£3) for 30 minute foot massage just in the market area. It's all open air, so no funny business...
Well I thought this massage stuff was supposed to be nice and relaxing and make you feel better!? Was one of the worst things I've ever spent money on. Bending my feet ways that they don't go, slapping my feet, digging knuckles in and then pulling my toes - I swear one of them is dislocated! And to top it off, I got the gay guy massaging my feet! I thought it was funny when Therese got the old man, but the smile was wiped off my face. It was painful and ticklish, far from relaxing - didn't know whether to laugh or cry! Then he pulled out this wood thing and started prodding me with that. I was in pain but he just smiled at me and had this really camp laugh...
He did a bit of massage on my calves which was fine, apart from he occasionally punched my calf and then would slap my foot. He edged up my thigh a bit too - I thought this was a foot massage!?
The next step of this Thai torture ritual was to bend my legs in lots of different ways. Legs in the air, folding, stretching, all kinds. He then put my legs into a position almost like crossing my legs and pushed my legs outward...he had his hands way too close to my crotch and from there pushed my knees out with his elbows...not sure I've explained that very well and if you can visualize that position, but it was a very awkward and uncomfortable time for me.
Therese was having her legs stretched and legs were above her head - I said don't fart! Could easily happen in these positions...
They were trying to get us to have 45 minutes massage, but I told him I'd had more than enough.
We finally left the massage place to make our way back. I got a little chicken satay type thing from one of the stalls which was really tasty. There's so much nice looking food here, and it all looks so fresh.
When we got back to the hotel, we had a look on Tripadvisor for another hotel. We freshened up and set off to find the restaurant. Couldn't find the damn place. Second restaurant we couldn't find. The map we have makes everything look close too, but it's not and you end up walking miles!
We ended up back at the same place as last night, Bee Garden Cafe - "the best pavement cafe in Bangkok". It's so good there, we wanted to try something else. I had Thai Green Curry which is pretty much the same as I had last night, so really nice. Therese had Fried Rice with chicken and vegetables, and it was so tasty. It was like a BBQ taste as well. Only cost 440 Baht (£9) with 2 large beers too.
Had a good day today, but going to get up early tomorrow to get plenty of sightseeing done.
