We had a bit of a lie in this morning to try catch up on our sleep and just grabbed a banana and cereal bar type thing for our breakfast. We decided to go across to Hong Kong Island today, so called by the tourist information centre and picked up a couple of maps. We caught the Star Ferry across which was only 2.50HKD (20p)!! Then we took the number 15 bus from the bus terminus just outside the ferry port to take us up to Victoria Peak. There's lots of sign posts and good maps available in Hong Kong, really geared up for tourists. I suppose it's because it's a cruise liner port. The subway system is cheap and easy to use too, although not quite as easy or good as Shanghai or Beijing.
Anyway, the bus trip up to Victoria Peak was nice and scenic, but a little scary. The roads up there are really narrow and at a lot of parts of the road, there's a sheer drop down! And the bus driver flies around all the corners. There's a new tourist centre at the top with lots of shops and restaurants and a new sky terrace. The sky terrace was 50HKD (about £4) for both of us. The views over Hong Kong were fantastic - all the sky scrapers and hotels etc. It's the view that most people will actually recognize (you'll see photos sometime soon). And then there are views to the other side of Hong Kong Island - really lush greenery and looks like a caribbean island. We were going to take the Peak Tram back down, but it cost 25HKD each (£2) whereas the bus was only 9.60HKD each (75p) - every little helps.
We got off the bus at central station and had a wander around SoHo and Lan Kwai Fong.
SoHo is filled with really nice restaurants with every cuisine you could think of. Out of our price range but would love to visit Hong Kong again and try some of these places.
Lan Kwai Fong has lots of bars that look really smart. It was only about 4.30 though so wasn't busy and hadn't come alive yet. Again, I'd like to come back and try these things on a holiday where we're not on a budget!
There's lots of Irish Bars in Hong Kong too.
At 8pm we watched the Symphony of Lights from the Avenue of Stars. It's a light show using some of the buildings that are across the waters - buildings light up, lasers into the sky and a bit of background music. Wasn't that cracking to be honest but suppose it's what you have to do when in Hong Kong and only lasts 15 minutes.
Once that had finished we walked along the Avenue of Stars which is like Hollywood's version with all the movie star names on the ground and some with a hand print. I got a picture with Jackie Chan's - the only person we knew. Oh, and a picture with Bruce Lee.
We wanted to eat in the street market so jumped on the tube up to where the Ladies Market is. Had a wander through there but there wasn't the outdoor people watching restaurants we wanted so we carried on walking down to Temple Street Market. Feel like we have walked miles and miles today! Finally found the restaurant - Spicy Crab. We had a plate of garlic broccoli (Therese wanted some greens), curry fried rice, sweet and sour chicken and a bottle of beer. It was the nicest meal we've had since being away! It was lovely and more like what we get back home from the takeaway. We were told by someone that Hong Kong food is like what we are used to in England.
Another long walk back to our digs. Stuck the news on to find that Rooney wants to leave Manchester United. And then that the Typhoon, that's in the Philippines, is heading towards Hong Kong and has caused flooding in Vietnam - great!
See what tomorrow brings...
