Early start again today. Up at 6.30, got ready, had breakfast and met at 7.15 for our transfer bus to get our coach to Sihanoukville (we are using Paramount Angkor Express bus company). It's about 4-5 hours to get there. Quite long but actually is the same as getting the National Express from Leeds to London.
You really need an iPod for this journey - bus driver constantly papping his horn which really gets on your nerves (only an hour into the journey as well!), plus they play Cambodian TV...so, so annoying! Unfortunately, I have to say that Cambodians have very high pitched squeaky voices! It's bellowing out of the speakers. Looks like some sort of comedy stage show and then they have a soap on - the Cambodians love it. Looks crap - ain't no Corrie anyway.
The scenery was even better on this bus trip and really makes the fairly long journey worthwhile! It's so green, with lots of palm trees around. Then you can see the hills/mountains at a distance on either side of the road. Along the roadside there are lots of wooden homes on stilts, and little wooden bridges dotted about where there are little reservoirs of water. And then for each little village you'll see a big colorful wall and then a huge gate and at the end of the road an absolutely pristine temple! They live in wooden shacks but all contribute to the upkeep of the temples.
We had a short stop at the "services" - nice squat toilets with piss and water all over the floor! We keep getting told how much more hygienic squat toilets are compared to putting bums on western toilets...don't think I've seen a single clean squat toilet so not sure how they work that one out...
We arrived in to a slightly rainy and windy Sihanoukville! Why does it have to be raining and cloudy when we get to a beach resort!?!?!?!? We're staying in quite nice little bungalows just a short walk from the beach as well - Ochheuteal Beach Side Bungalows.
This town is quite small and more laid back and doesn't have loads and loads of shops. More renowned for bars and restaurants.
We checked-in etc and then met back in the bar to go through what activities there are to do. Me and Therese wanted to go for a quick walk to see what is around so didn't eat in the hotel place with everyone and went down to the beach area. Bit of a building site at the moment as all the little restaurant/bars are being refurbished and moved back about 10 feet to make way for a new walkway. And because it wasn't sunny, it didn't look that nice on the beach - sea and sand always looks much better in the sun.
We didn't spend too long down there. Grabbed a sandwich and met back with the group.
We all decided to go to the see some waterfalls. It was about a 30 minute drive away down a long dirt track. It was still raining but we wanted to do something at least. The waterfalls were really really good with lots of wooden walk ways to get to better viewing areas - not sure the wooden bridges past health and safety checks...
Fresh water and a a river meet here, and a few people were swimming in the fresh water. None of us had brought a towel or anything so didn't get in. Just had a look around the waterfalls and took some pictures. Shame it was crap weather because there were really nice places to have a picnic and lots of hammocks around. We sat down in a sheltered area and had some drinks and started playing cards (I had them in my bag). We played a game called spoon, but with pens. Really funny and frantic game - easy game but won't bother explaining it...these blogs are long enough as it is!!
Our tour leader took us to a seafront restaurant which was dirt cheap. It cost us $10 (£6.50) for 2 chicken kebab meals (came with salad, garlic bread, potato and 3 kebab skewers), 4 beers and a bottle of water!! The draught beer was 50 cents (30p) for a large beer (not quite a pint though). Nice beer too. And the food was really good!
After that we wanted to see what the night life was like so headed up the hill. First busy place we came across was called Utopia - it was absolutely mental in there. Full of all kinds of different people. And it was happy hour...25 cent (16p) for half a pint!! There was a pool as well and a big group came in and all started jumping in - some of them only had underwear on! Then we were all stood near this tall pole with flame coming out. Next thing, it kept lighting up really strong and everybody was screaming, and then again, and this big crowd came running over to the pole, shouting and screaming and swinging around the pole - it was the dancefloor! I thought it was to keep the Mosquitos away!
Had a couple in there and then went exploring to find Monkey Republic. Was a pretty cool bar that played good music and was a much calmer place.
Had one in there and wanted to find somewhere else - a place we had been given a flier for. Walked all the way down this dirt track to the beach and found the bar, but it was dead! So walked back to Utopia. Was still busy but think they'd closed the pool. And drinks were still cheap even out of happy hour - $1 (65p) for a pint!
Our group got attacked by a flying cockroach in as well...
