Rennes is a great city. The capital of Brittany, it is a perfect mix of medieval wooden buildings, wide boulevards an leafy open spaces. So while it contains nothing overly touristy, we have had the opportunity to live more like locals, getting to know these streets, exploring the local market and relaxing in the large park grounds.
The market was a definite highlight. Unlike the market in Dinan where most stalls sold clothes and jewellery, the Rennes Market on Saturday morning is dedicated to food - much to our (especially Tom's) delight. While the meat and seafood are not cheap (well not for us cheap backpackers I should say) the fruit and veg are great prices and look so delicious! There are most of my favourite summer fruits: berries, melons, mangoes and stone fruits. Even apples are in season. It was hard to stop me buying lots of everything! The market is huge and it's so impressive to see such fantastic local Breton produce such as cheeses and breads. Needless to say we are well stocked for some delicious dinners for the next two nights.
While soccer is on after midnight in Australia, Tom has been lucky to see quite a few Arsenal games while over here in Europe. As it's 30 degrees today and there is no beach like in St Malo, Tom found an Irish pub so we could enjoy an air conditioned viewing of this weekend's Arsenal game. We will not report on it's outcome.
While it's been a slow few days in Rennes without the huge list of must-sees, again it's actually quite a nice change to live a little more like locals, and we really like this city.
