Yesterday we travelled to Burgundy, stopping in Dijon on the way to our country château in Chorey-les-Beaune.
Dijon housed the Dukes of Burgundy and their palace, which is still used today as the town hall and an arts museum. It has a lovely town centre where we found the Maille mustard shop with more types and flavours of mustard than we could have imagined! We also visited the basilica.
Chorey-les-Beaune is a tiny village north of Beaune in a stretch of land known as the Côte D'or or "Gold Coast" due to the beautiful gold leaves the vines carry at certain times of the year. We're staying in a small château, Château de Chorey, the home of a local winemaker. It was lovely accommodation and the best part was staying out of town and meandering through past the vineyards to discover other small towns nearby. It was very peaceful.
Beaune itself is a lovely town, with the centre full of lovely little restaurants, wine bars and cafes. Being in Burgundy, or Bourgogne as the French call it, we couldn't miss our chance to try Beouf Bourguignon. It was delicious and served to us in a giant pot with little pans of tagliatelle pasta - delicious!
Today was a more relaxed day, when we took our chance to explore the villages nearby as I mentioned and enjoy our accommodation. Mum and Dad drove up the scenic route through the Côte D'or back up towards Dijon visiting well known names such as Nuit Sainte George and back down to Beaune with a new favorite Savigny-les-Beaune.
For dinner we went to a local wine bar that was run by a couple and it is full of locals who all know each other. They love their wine and we used it as our opportunity to sample some Burgundy wine as the Burgundians are renowned for not being that welcoming to visitors apart from the large producers. We're starting to compile quite a list now of wines we like in France! Who knows if we'll find many back home though!
