Last day in Athens for a little while anyway.
Spent the morning looking at more significant archaeological ruins /sites, firstly the Temple of Olymian Zeus, Hadrian's Arch, then the Temple of Dionysius at the base if the Acropolis.
I found the ancient theatres most interesting - beautifully, symetrically designed. It was very easy to imagine what it would have felt like to sit in these theatres on a balmy summer Athens evening sitting amongst the crowd watching a performance. I'm not sure the front row seats with their posher, more elaborately carved seats would have been the place to sit. I preferred the view that the higher row seats up the back offered of the semi-circular stage.
After an unimpressive lunch (and another reluctantly consumed espresso coffee) and a bit of brief shopping and browsing n the flee market area, it was time to grab our bags from the hotel and catch the train to the port town of Pireaus.
As I write this, I am sitting in the lobby of the hotel, drinking a glass of ouzo on ice (which I am finding is much more consistently satisfying than Greek wine!) and chatting with the friendly front desk girl. It is nearly 9.00pm at night. Tomorrow is an early start in order to catch our ferry ride over to the island of Santorini. I sure hope it is smooth sailing as I am prone to sea sickness!
