This morning we had another trip to Melbourne planned, and headed off to the catch the train from Marshall after breakfast. Our first stop was going to be the Queen Victoria Market for some more souvenir shopping and lunch in the food court…but we didn't realise until we arrived that it's closed on Wednesdays (why?). Plan A scrapped, we moved straight onto lunch at a café next to the market. I tried the 'full breakfast' which was missing a hash brown and fried bread, plus the sausage tasted funny (maybe kangaroo!) - not the best start to the day overall!
It didn't get much better when we went to the catch the tram to the theatre - we got on one heading in the wrong direction so had to get off at the next stop, get on one going the right way, then try and find the theatre when we didn't really know where to look! We made it just in time, and got sat down bang on 1pm for the matinee performance of 'Love Never Dies', the sequel to Phantom of the Opera.
Once we'd got our breath back, we enjoyed the show - a big, elaborate set and a good tale, plus the theatre had air-con so we all managed to cool off!
After the show, we jumped on another tram to have a look at Port Melbourne - a break from the hot city streets! I've been really impressed with the public transport in and around Melbourne - trains, metros, trams and buses all linked together and easy to navigate, with a ticket that works on all of the above - we could learn a few lessons from the Aussies on how to shift people around without using cars!
Port Melbourne had an industrial dock area and a more touristy beachside area with cafes and bars - nice for a stroll! We stopped off for a couple of beers at a bar overlooking the beach in the hot sunshine - could be worse!
Then we headed for home, via McDonalds back in the city for some free wifi. Another busy day and quiet night in front of the telly with a glass of wine!

Maria Bailey A lovely day. I had forgotten about the market being closed and getting the wrong tram. Was very impressed with the theatre - much bigger than British ones - higher and much more leg room in the seating area - take note UK! Another perfect day. Good memories :-)
