Today we were awoken at 6:45am by Wayne after a 'lie-in' - he normally gets everyone up at 6:30! We'd had heavy rain during the night but we'd managed to stay dry inside our tent, although we were pretty stiff after a night on the sand!
Breakfast was cornflakes and there's been plenty of food to go around so far - we won't starve! Last night's chicken stir fry was pretty good too…anyway, enough about the food!
After a quick stop at the shops and toilets (bit of a queue for the one toilet in the men's!), We headed to Eli Creek, our first stop of the day, with Kelly behind the wheel, and minus the Irish girls Elizabeth and Mary, who decided to leave after one night - it's really not that bad! Anyway, they decided they'd had enough so they headed off in a taxi to catch the barge. Kelly did well with her first experience of 4WD beach driving! I wish I could have a go but my licence is one month short of being valid as you have to have been driving for 2 years - gutted! At Eli Creek we waded up the stream for a short way then back down the stream towards the ocean. The water was crystal clear and we all enjoyed the chance to cool off.
Soon we were back in the cars again and on our way to the wreck of the Maheno, a passenger liner that was blown ashore in 1935 by a cyclone while being towed to a Japanese scrapyard. It's been rusting on the beach ever since and it was quite an eerie sight - we were surprised that it was still intact despite being hammered by the waves for the past 77 years! By this point we'd swapped vehicles to give some of the others a chance to drive and we were now travelling with Wayen - we were in safe hands!
Our next stop were the Pinnacles, a section of coloured sand cliffs. As we were talking our happy snaps, one of the Irish lads said to me 'Bet you don't get things like this on Teesside do you?', Err…we've got cliffs all along our coast, thanks very much! We stopped and ate lunch at a café/picnic area by Cathedral Beach before driving about 20km north along the beach to our swimming spot for the day - the Champagne Pools. These were stunning giant rock pools where the huge waves crashed and broke in front of us - one of our favourite places so far!
From there we headed inland and went for a walk to the top of Indian Head. It was quite tough to get up there in the heat (especially for Kel who did it in flip flops!) but we made it eventually and were rewarded with a spectacular 360° view of the island! We were pretty sweaty and disgusting after our climb so Wayne took us back to Eli Creek on the return journey for another dip!
Back at camp, everyone had a bit more space to eat and drink because of the better weather. We had steak and potatoes for tea (another amazing camp meal!) and finished off our goon (and a few other people's) with a few drinking games! We moved into the Irish girls tent so hopefully we'll get a better night's sleep, as they had paid the extra $2 each for mats to sleep on which we didn't bother with! Another action-packed day on Fraser!
