Today was overcast when we got up so we decided to go and visit a couple of places in the city. Our first stop were the Roma Street Parklands, described as the world's largest subtropical garden in a city centre! It was developed in 2000 on the site of the old Roma Street railway yards and contains thousands of unique species of plants, birds, lizards and fish. The subtropical rainforest area was only part of the park, there was also a lake and an arid garden, focussing on the plants and animals that can survive in the Australian desert. We had a good wander round and were all very impressed - definitely one of the best parks we've ever seen (and we've been to a few on this trip) and we loved the weird plants and flowers and the water dragons that we kept spotting wandering around!
We stopped for lunch by the lake and spent a couple of hours relaxing with our books - nice! Kelly then treated us all to milkshakes and smoothies in the café, before we headed to the Museum of Brisbane. We wanted to see their Cabinet of Curiosities exhibition, filled with random artefacts from all over Australia. It deliberately didn't have a theme, so we saw a stuffed dog, a bit for medical electrocutions, a 1920s ventriloquist dummy and a Japanese prisoner of war flag all in the same room!
After a rest and a meal back at the hostel, we went out to the nearby cinema to see the new Sherlock Holmes film. I really enjoyed it, but Kel was still not quite over the jet lag and fell asleep about 15 minutes in! She woke up in the middle for a while then slept right through to the end!
Tomorrow we're leaving Brisbane and heading to Noosa for some surfing and the Australia Zoo!
