Our next stop after Brisbane was supposed to be Fraser Island. Its the biggest sand island in the world and basically, you rent a 4wd and drive round the sand. However, this turned out to be very expensive and we knew we couldnt afford to do both Fraser Island and the Whitsundays so we chose the latter.
So instead, we stayed in a really nice hostel for a few days and got drunk! We were only going to stay for one night, but each morning we woke up and decided to stay for another! We decided to get a little bit of exercise so we played a game of tennis. This was harder than it sounds though as we were playing in hiking boots and it was about 30 degrees outside. This would be Bens excuse anyway though because i whooped his arse at it. He doesnt like being beaten by a girl :-)
They have a wii bowling competition there every night, so after Bens embarrassing tennis match it was time for him to show his manly skills and win the competition.........only it didnt quite work like that. I won instead much to his dissapointment but i did share the free bottle of wine i won with him which made him feel a bit better.
After a few days we moved on to Airlie Beach to go on a Whitsundays trip. We were waiting at the harbour to board the boat and just in the water were 2 lion fish! They are the most amazing fish and we were rather shocked to see them in the harbour. There were also these weird fish things that kind of looked like eels. We went on a sailing boat called Camira which takes you through the Whitsunday islands. Some of the islands have been bought and turned into 5* hotels. However, one of the hotels bought an island next to it and turned it into a golf course, making it a 6* hotel! The islands were stunning and we wished we had stayed overnight on one of them but we were running out of time on the east coast. We got dropped off at Whitehaven beach which is the purist beach in the world and voted the worlds third best eco beach. The silicon is so pure that you can clean the enamel on your teeth. Only a few people decided to actually put sand in their mouth though! The sand is pure white which means it never gets hot even though it is boiling there because it reflects the heat away from it. We played a few games on the beach, kicking a ball around and playing in the water. The water was so clean that you could be in it up to your shoulders and still see the bottom. I was taking a few pictures of the boys doing handstands in the water when a shark passed us through the water!!!! It was so shallow in the water, maybe only 2 metres into the sea. We later found out it was a shovel nosed ray/shark. That was rather frightening!! We also saw the shadow of a sting ray when we got back on the boat.
They then take you to a reef where you can get out and snorkel. Some people saw a shark there and Ben managed to see a turtle.
We had a great day on the boat, met some great people, ate a wonderful BBQ and had free drinks. It was definitely worth the money!
Then we went up to Cairns, the last stop on the East Coast
