6th September
I saw a sign for bacon the day before so I led everyone there for breakfast. It was amazing, everyone was able to order all the food they were craving so everyone was very happy.
We then went to see some pre inca ruins. The city of Moche, where the Moche people lived from 150-800AD. They made their temples and homes out of mud bricks and every one hundred years they filled in the old with mud bricks and built a new, bigger temple ontop. The original 3&4th temples had been exposed and preserved.
At lunch they had local people performing traditional Peruvian dances and then we went to see the main square which was surrounded by colourful buildings used now for museums and the mayors house. Plus a huge yellow stone cathedral.
Next we saw the city of Chan Chan, the largest pre-Colombian city in South America, where the Chimu people lived from 800-1450AD. They are not believed to be the descendants of the Moche people, just that they arrived soon after the dispersal of Moche. Chan chan has 10 walled citadels, they would use for 2/3 generations of kings, then abandon the citadel and build a new one every 80 years or so. A lot of what we saw at Chan Chan had been reconstructed with mud bricks ontop of the original foundations.
We went back to the surfers hostel for dinner which was beautiful and really cheap, then onto the night bus to Lima.
