Alice had eaten some yummy veggie burgers on the Fraser trip, and so I asked at reception where they came from, and so we both brought some from the butchers and then used the computers at Tribal Travel. After that we set off for Hervey Bay, since we had a whale watching trip booked. It was slightly annoying as that meant we had to go back up the East Coast, but we got to get so close to some of the whales that it was worth it. They were selling a CD with whale songs on which Alice jokingly asked if she could have a listen but apparently sexually mature males actually sing structured songs with distinguished choruses and verses to woo the females, and we got to listen to them singing via an underwater microphone whilst a female was leading a chase of potential mates. Most of the time she chooses the last whale still going as he is the strongest and so her spawn will have the best chance of survival. They got distracted by us though- we had to wave to grab their attention and then they kept popping up their heads to get a better look at us and interact with us. We were provided with a very hearty afternoon tea both on the way out and back in from Platypus Bay off Fraser Island, consisting of cakes, cookies and savoury bread plaits and cheese (!) and biscuits, which probably explained why it was so expensive ($99) although I'm a bit puzzled as to when they took the money out as the lady said she only took my card details to confirm the booking and wasn't taking any payment. The free onboard Wi-Fi only started working at the very end.
I hadn't realised how long the tour was going to be- we arrived back to Hervey Bay at 6 so we didn't make it to Brisbane, but we are staying in the car park of a service station for free which, if McDonalds Wi-Fi was working would have all the amenities we could possibly need- free showers, toilets, a shop, picnic area, BBQ, etc and I'm pretty sure we are allowed to stay the night since surely the road signs saying you should rest if tired indicates that's what you should do.
