We were told to meet the guide at 12, so had some time to kill. We went to the cash point, but my credit card didn't work. A Rs200 phone call revealed that Halifax had yet again neglected to tell me an important feature- I can only withdraw 50% of my credit limit in cash. I'm sure I didn't read that in the terms and conditions!
We returned from the internet cafe at 12, but our guide wasn't there at half past so we rang him (today has been the first day we've ventured out of the hotel to make phone calls- it's a lot cheaper that way) and apparently he had left a message with reception changing it to 1.30. We filled the time gap by exploring and found a bookshop. I flicked through a few cookery books and Alice was impressed by the range of Mindfulness and Meditation books on offer. She was jokingly suggesting she brought a Mother Theresa book (In the Gwalior local newspaper, Steve was quoted as saying he wanted to be the next MT) but was kind of tempted as the blurb sounded quite interesting.
The guide was still not as prompt as Mahesh, even at 1.30 pm, and because all we wanted to do was walk along the Ghats, but obviously for that he wouldn't get Sari factory commission, we had to go there first. They were weaving them on looms, which used cards with holes in different patterns to pick up the different threads to pass the spindle (?) through. We saw them knocking the holes in the cards too which was very noisy! A goat wearing a jumper came in at one point! My excuse for not buying anything was that my card wasn't giving me cash, but we still had to endure our knees being buried under scarf after scarf. I had to hold back a giggle because it seemed like it was never going to end. The bedcovers and cushion covers were very nice but I'll wait until I have more money! Free Pepsi was as nice as always.
When we got out the shop, we learned that Alice was to ride on the back of someone else's motorbike to go to the Ghats- I was scared of being split up, especially as it was only me who had the hotel's business card. We both got there though (the driver said I was a lot more confident than Alice was). Along the side of the Ghats, there were signs to various bakeries, recommended in the lonely planet, so we went to search it out. We shared a pot of mint tea, and a cinnamon bun and brought some rolls for the train tomorrow.
We're pretty sure the bike driver said he was going to pick us up at 7 for a walk along the Ghats (although most of the things he told us we were doing, we didn't really want to do) so we rushed back to an internet cafe to order domino's pizza. Online it said it wouldn't deliver to us so we ordered by phone (which the receptionist at the phone stall had to help us with- when the dominoes man repeated the phone number of the hotel, every 2 sounded like a 3 but when I said "no, 2", he'd say "yes, yes, 3" so I'm not sure whether he was just saying it in a funny way). We scoffed it down only to be kept waiting again by the bike driver. Since we didn't want to go anyway, we just went to an internet cafe.
I couldn't sleep for ages due to a wedding being held in our hotel, and a really loud fight between 2 unidentifiable animals.
