After another yummy coconut omelette, we did our first proper backpacking walk with our rucksacks on, from the homestay to the ferry jetty - we were very sweaty by the end and glad to give our shoulders a rest! When we got to the mainland part of Kochi- Ernakulum- we walked some more to the bus stand. There was a bus waiting outside our platform but it didn't say where it was going in English so had to trust the man who said it was going to Kollam.
A few stops in, some fellow travellers got on and so we got talking to them. The couple were from Melbourne, and they had kidnapped a Chinese girl to do an overnight houseboat trip from Allappey. The Chinese girls original travel plans sounded crazy - she was [planning to go to 5 cities in 10 days and then spend 2 days in Melbourne. The couple were good at giving advice- they said if I want to do bar work it would be worthwhile doing a bar tending course. They also explained what all the 'Biennale' signs and artwork was about in Kochi. It's an art festival and this is the first year it's been on in India. The graffiti artist was apparently quite big in Melbourne. They are going to be in Varkala so gave us their emails. At most of the bus stations the bus left soon after it arrived but luckily at one both me and Alice had the time to go to the toilet before it went on its way again.
The DTPC tourist information centre in Kollam was right next to the bus station, so we booked our backwaters tour, and then used their map to get lost whilst finding the YMCA. Once we found it, Alice started throwing things away to make her bag lighter, and then went to dinner. It was very cheap as we both had a bottle of water, a masala dosa and ½ a coconut uttapam, all for 90 Rs!
