Owen dropped me off at midland this morning and I caught a train from there to Perth for $3.80! When I arrived I did a spot of shopping (lara you would love the ugg shops, they bling em up now too), before having a look around the aboriginal shop! I managed to take pictures without having my phone confiscated as the girl on the till was too busy chatting on Facebook! I then walked down through London court where I had some expensive breakfast on the way to catch the ferry over to south Perth zoo! Meanwhile a realised I was walking through a CHOGM area (commonwealth heads of government meeting) so I threw my crocodile Dundee knife in the bushes in case I was searched!
I paid $22 for the zoo and enjoyed seeing the lil cute koala bears clinging onto the tree for dear life! I then got chatting to the zoo tour guide outside the bear home, originally from jersey who looked like super nanny and proudly showed off her 23 year service badge! She gave me my own private tour and informed me that rich Cambodians buy 'bear foot soup' for $1300 which has assisted in the demise of these cute lil creatures! Perth zoo is renowned for being world leaders in orangotang breeding as they discovered that by leaving the daughters and nieces with the mothers throughout birth and whilst raising their young, they stand a much higher chance of raising healthy lil babies! And yes Lara, I managed to see the slow loris but unfortunately he didn't look as ticklish as the one on YouTube!!!
After that I caught the free bus to the british museum where I saw barrier reef specimens, stuffed animals and skeletons and the evolution of the horse which I already knew!
It wasn't until I walked upstairs that I found what I was looking for! Since I have been in Australia I have wanted to understand the history behind the aboriginals and the British colonisation and 'horrified', doesn't begin to explain what I felt as I discovered more and more! When the Brits first landed in Oz, they undermined aboriginal people and criminalises them for their culture! It wasn't long before the police armies went and massacred many tribes and although a few cases did make it to the district attorney, they didn't go any further due to insufficient evidence!!! Legislation followed to eradicate aboriginal people by gradually turning the population White and not allowing children to indulge in their own culture by 'taking children away' from their families and institutionalising them in either foster care or children's homes ran by nuns! Aboriginal parents agreed to this initially due to the promise of education however their children were never returned! Although some kids escaped the sexual and physical abuse they may have suffered within their tribes, the vast majority suffered the same fate, pain and torture at the hands of their White carers! There is not a single aboriginal family that exists today that has not been subject to this atrocity and it is only within the last decade that the Australian prime minister apologised for the harm that had been caused, something that his predecessor refused to do! As of its not bad enough that the White man made aboriginal people feel second class citizens in their own country but to rip babies as young as 3 weeks away from their parents forever is barbaric! I think it's going to take more than an apology to heel these deep scars!!!
