Today we went for a tour of the Lava Tubes in the Undara Volcanic NP. The National Park is only accessible by guided tour due to the dangers of confined spaces and CO2 in the tubes. The lava tubes are interesting and it was worth the trip to see them; However the Undara resort which is just outside the NP is very commercial. The dusty, uneven, unpowered campsite was $38pn and the facilities are very old. They do not allow you to collect firewood although you can buy it from them!!
We enjoyed a relaxing morning, did the 2 hour lava tube tour and then drove to the Kalkani crater and walked 1.3km around the rim. This area is covered in old inactive volcanoes. Today I learnt than basalt is lava from shield volcanoes and scoria is lava from explosive volcanoes. We saw little Eastern horseshoe bats in the lava tubes, they only weigh 8 grams.
Lastnight we saw a Rufous Bettong near our camp; and today we saw lots of wallabies and wallaroos in the National Park.

Tessa Can't resist commenting on this one - for some reason those Lava Tubes really stick in my memory - I think they had just imported some old railway carriages to rent out to overnight visitors when we visited - and yes it was expensive to stay there then - we visited during the day too,
