The Great Ocean Road was a beautiful drive and stretch of the coast, long meandering roads with stunning views would've been perfect on a motorbike, or even my road bike if I had a week to do it. I Had imagined the drives we took along the west coast with mind numming straight roads but this was nothing like that. They say Melbourne can have all four seasons in one day, which is true. Well the great ocean road had just as much variety of landscape. Parts reminded me of old Hunstanton with the high rising cliffs, which stretched pretty much all the way along. And then as soon as we moved in land it looked more like whitby high rolling hills, like we were in a scene from heartbeat.
The main thing to see on the great ocean road is the 12 apostles, great rock formations from worn linestine, one supposedly in the shape of London bridge... could've been any bridge really.. when we got back to the car, two German girls approached us.. thinking ah we don't have time for this.. was actually because they'd just revered into our rental car with their tow bar right at the back.. and sure enough a dent in the front right door.. then we started thinking. How the heck have they managed to reverse into a parked car.. considering she didn't need to reverse to even get into the spot.. well anyways fair play they stayed and gave us their details.. not too sure we would've wanted to pay if it was the other way round... now we've just gotta sort out payment with the rental company.. ah well they've got jords card!
So our nobel stead for this journey was a little red Kia, similar to the Toyota Yaris. Was super weird driving an automic. Kept putting my left foot down when coming up to a junction and hand out to change down a gear. Although I did appreciate the cruise control on the long straight roads.
Obviously in the way back we planed our drive so we happened to pass two little brewery's.. and what fine beer they had, one with a blueberry Belgium style beer, and the other with an odd sweet cherry beer. Well worth the detour. And actually between the two brewery's the gps was being stupid and telling us to go the long way round.. me however had spotted a shortcut.. it turned out the shortcut was actually through a national park down some dirt tracks.. slightly more off road than we thought. But sure enough we shaved 20 minutes of the journey... We then headed back for the main great ocean road for the epic views and winding roads home.
