Fraser Island. The largest sand island in the world.! Really didn't disappoint. The East side of the island has a beach stretching 110km. 110km of soft sand with loads of 4x4 and large buses bombing down it. Now this trip has been the thing I was most looking forward to on the whole of the East Coast trip. Driving 4x4's along the beach and off road in the national parks. I actually had the best driving stretch on the first day where as it was getting later in the day the tide was coming in and claiming more of the beach back so we had to drive along the softer sand. Well as soon as one of the wheels touches that sand the steering tends to have a mind of its own. It was hard work almost wrestling with the steering trying to keep it in a reasonably straight line. The trick to the soft sand was to stick it in a lower gear, keep the revs up and plough through it. Well the car in front had a couple of French girls driving and must've got stuck about 6 times.. Now we were all talking through the walkie talkies telling her to straighten up the wheels reverse a little bit then keep it in first and just keep the revs up... But no. The French are a stubborn bunch, ignored all of us and kept getting stuck. Bloody croissants!!! Well when I didn't have to keep stopping the drive was insane. Especially when the back end started to kick out as the bank was sloping down, going off road up some pretty steep gradients and pools of water. Unbelievable amount of fun added with the fact the car was an absolute monster and could plough over pretty much everything!
Now we definitely had the best car out of the whole group, me, Danny, Jord, 3 Irish that loved a drink, an Austrian and a German! Everyone was pretty cool and got on really well. 3 people we met in noosa a couple of days before were also on the tour with us so we all drank plenty of goon at night round a massive camp fire.
Now what really made our trip was our crazy nutty tour leader. Muzza..! About as ozzy as an Australian can get. An ex dairy farmer/ NRL player who swore pretty much every other word but didn't have a bad bone in his body! A larger than life guy and had some of the craziest stories from the stuff he'd seen over the 20 years he'd been doing these trips. Now this guy must've smoked about 70 cigarettes a day. One after the other. And the more impressive/slightly dangerous part was rolling cigarettes whilst driving with his knees. Driving on the sand was already hard enough.!! Lake Mckenzie, the main attraction of the Frazer trip. Reminded me of being back in the Philippines, crystal clear water and white sand. Now the White sand there was so high in a certain mineral that it's perfect for exfoliating your skin. I even rubbed it in my hair give it a lil wash! Skin felt so smooth afterwards! We probably had the best weather of the trip at the lake which put the icing on the cake, and we even managed to make a 4 story human pyramid!
