Kya Travels
I woke up this morning and went downstairs for some breakfast while the boys kept sleeping. They had a bit of a buffet set out, with cereals and toast and eggs, as well as what was more like lunch food, plates of meats and cheeses, pickles and capsicums and cucumbers and that sort of thing, as well as a couple of dishes I had no idea what they were, but looked like fish or something... Should have found out what it was! Something I learnt this morning when I went to pour my glass of apple juice, is that 'applesjin' actually means orange, and 'eple' is apple! So I had a glass of orange juice instead!! I grabbed a little sandwich that was made up for Darren when he woke up, and went back upstairs. The boys were still sleeping, so I decided to go out for a walk around the place. First I had a bit of a walk around the park in front of the hotel, checking out the flowers and statues they had set up there. It's very pretty, all the flowers have bloomed and everything's green. Then I headed down to the water and went for a walk along the wharf. There was a massive cruise ship docked there as well as heaps of smaller fishing ships and other smallish boats. The harbor itself wasn't very nice, a bit smelly and dirty, but the view of the mountains on the other side was amazing! I walked along the waters edge for a while, and it started to rain at one stage, but it was still awesome. From my next great viewpoint, I could see one of the mountains with snow on it, which looked as if there was fresh snow on the top, as it was kind of dotted rather than a slab of white. I reckon it was snowing at that moment too, cos there was a big darkish cloud covering the very tip of the mountain. Very cool! After that I left the waterside, and just went for a walk along the streets, looking at the town. I passed the entrance to the bridge that takes you off the island of Tromso and across to the mountains, then walked back through the city centre and back up to the hotel. When I got back Darren woke up and went to go have a shower and get ready to go do something. While he was in there Lyle finally decided to apologize for the other night, for "whatever I did, I don't remember"... So I filled him in, and told him I wasn't happy at all. Then I went out to the couches outside our room and Skyped Tiana for a while. After Darren's shower Lyle apologized to him as well, and got a piece of Darren's mind! Then Darren and I went for a walk. We went down the Main Street and kept walking past the bridge, where we went over a little bridge and got a view of heaps of very pretty houses. They looked very cool, kind of stuck into the hill, all crazy angles and bright colors. Very nice. After that it got a bit industrial, so we turned back and headed into the main city again. We stopped at a little museum called the Perspektivet museum, which was free entry so we decided to go in for a look. They had three levels and it was kind of a history of the area through photography that had been found and collected. The first level was an exhibition on Africans living with HIV, all done by the same photographer, then as you went upstairs there were lots of photos of Tromso and people from the area, just in their everyday lives. Some of them were pretty cool, but overall we didn't spend too much time there. We left there and headed down to the water, where there was a place called the polarmusèe, so we thought we'd have a look in there too. There was an entry fee, so we just had a quick look around the lobby instead of going into the museum, as it was more about the history of hunting in the arctic areas of Norway. There was a cool poster in the lobby which had a bit of information about the indigenous norwegian people, the Sami, which was pretty cool. They lived right up north, and herded reindeer, and are what some people would refer to as Eskimos! After that we headed out and walked back along the wharf and stopped at a place called Rorbua Pub, where we shared a $16 beer in the sun (yes, Norway is expensive!), which was brewed at a brewery in Tromso which is the northernmost brewery in the world, called Mack. Pretty cool. We kept walking around the streets for a while, and had a quick look in a souvenir shop, which was full of trolls! Weird... Then kept walking. We ran into Lyle along the way, then decided to go find somewhere to eat. We went back down to the wharf to a place called Kaia bar and restaurant. It was a pretty expensive place even for norwegian standards, but we had to go there so the boys could try some weird norwegian food... Reindeer and whale... Eww... After dinner we headed back up to the hotel for a bit of a snooze and rest before our big night! A bit after 9 we got up and headed down to the bridge where we walked across to the mainland. It was a pretty long bridge and took us maybe 10 or so minutes to cross! In the middle of the bridge we could see some massive fish just chilling in the river. No idea what they were but they were huge and there were heaps of them! We got over the bridge and walked up another 15-20 minutes to fjellheisen, which is the cable car service to take you to the top of the mountain. We got our ticket and got into the car and got lifted up the mountain. We got some amazing views over Tromso on the way up, and even Darren looked down! There was a girl hiking up the mountain below us at one stage, which looked very hard! And the last part of the hike was a cliff face! Dunno how she'll go there!! Once we got up the top, we got a beer at the cafe and sat looking out over the mountains and rivers and islands. It was so beautiful! We went out of the building and went to go for a bit of a hike. We could see some patches of snow so we decided to head up that way and see if we could get to it. A while later we discovered we could!! It was Lyles first time ever seeing snow, and in the first couple of times for Darren and I! It was so cool! We had a bit of fun there, and I was taking a photo of Lyle just about to throw his very first snowball, when he got hit with one from Darren! And I got the photo! It's my favourite photo in the whole world! Hilarious! After our snow fight we did a little 'skiing', by just sliding down the snow and trying not to fall! That was fun! When we had got our fill of snow time, we walked a bit further up the hill to a good vantage point to sit and watch the view at midnight. Crazy midnight sun! After midnight we started the trek back down the mountain so we didn't miss the last cable car at 1am. We got down much quicker than we got up, so went for one more walk to a close lookout before heading back to the warm warm cabin! We got the cable car back down and started the long walk back to the hotel. By the time we got back my legs weren't very happy with me! But it was awesome! Such a good night! I got a shower to warm my bones back up, then we went to sleep.
