Kya Travels
We got up and walked down to the Mikes Bikes Tours office, where we booked our tour for the next day, before walking down to Dam Square in the city centre. We joined the free walking tour there, where our guide Lee greeted us and gave us a quick introduction to the city and its history. One of my favourite quotes of the day was when she told us 'God created the world, but the Dutch created the Netherlands'. That was pretty cool. She told us how a lot of the country is actually below sea level, and is kept above ground with the use of their canal systems and used to be kept above the sea by the use of the famous Dutch windmills. The history of the city is actually quite interesting with all the different influences it had from being a massive trading centre, it never got stuck down with politics and religion, giving the basis for the very liberal lifestyle that they still enjoy today. Lee took us around the town, through the red light district and past a few prostitutes, giving us the history of the area, and took us outside a big catholic church right in the middle of the red light district, where all the sailors would go after enjoying the red light district, to confess their sins before setting sail again! We walked all around the city, past another small I amsterdam sign, past an umbrella fountain, where we had a dip to cool off, over bridges and along canals. She told us all about the city, and bikes and the canals and everything. She was really good. When the tour finished we tipped her and followed her to a little Dutch cafe, were we had a drink and hung out with some of the people from the tour. We chatted to a weird American girl who was not a fan of Darren for some reason, and kept making snide remarks towards him, which was weird... But she did share her beef croquets with him! Random. Then we hung out with a group of Canadians, two sisters, Marie-eve and Laurianne, and one of their boyfriends, Shawn. We had a good chat to them for a while, then exchanged facebooks and organized to maybe meet up that night for a pub crawl. We left after that and headed back to the main street where we went to an Indian restaurant for dinner called Koh-I-Noor. We picked it because it had the same name as a place at home! We got some dinner there, (on a side note, they had awesome placemats with a big map of India with different facts about the country on it... Pretty cool!) and we got talking to a couple of girls on the table next to us who were from Denmark, Janne and Lea. We talked and joked around with them for a while, and invited them to the pub crawl that night which they seemed pretty keen for. We got their Facebook details too, then headed off and jumped on a tram back to the hostel. We chilled out in the room for a while, and tried to find the pub crawl details on google, with no luck, so ended up just organizing to meet up at the pub that we thought it might start at. When we were ready to go out again, we jumped on a tram again, and had to pay!! We had been a bit cheeky until then and just jumped on the trams, but this one had a ticket box, so we bought a ticket, went in to Dam Square, then walked up to the pub called Winston's. The place was packed and so hot! The Danish girls were there but there was no sign of the Canadians, or of the pub crawl, so after a while we decided to get out of there and go to another pub. There was one just a few shops down, called Durty Nellys, so we went in there and as we were walking in, a really drunk Swedish guy came out and started chatting to us and asking if we were doing the pub crawl! So at least we found the pub crawl! We went in and got our wristband, then I thought I'd go back and see if the Canadian guys were there yet, which they were, so we all went back to the pub crawl. The people who were running the pub crawl had bottles of vodka mixed with who-knows-what and they were walking around the room pouring it into people's mouths. That was pretty funny! So we got a few free drinks out of that before heading to the next pub. As you went in you lined up and got another shot, which was cool. At this place we got some beers and played a game of 'throw the coaster so it lands on the other persons glass', which I was the champion of. Lea, one of the Danish girls, challenged me to a 'next person that lands one, gets a drink from the other' competition, which I won too, so I got a free beer! Yay! Not long after that we got told we were moving on to the next place, and three of us still had full beers! So we finished those up quick as we could, then lined up for our vodka shot on the way out and headed to the next place. This one was probably the best one, as everyone was at a really good level of drunk and having a great time. They had karaoke and the vodka shot we got on entry was the best of the lot! Marie-eve liked it so much we even got the name of the bottle off the bartenders! After that one we headed to our last pub before they were all going to clubs, and it seemed fine at first, but not long after we got there we were told to be quiet, because they had neighbors around... That seemed crazy to me for a pub crawl, and the guy was really rude about it. Our Canadian friends weren't drinking by that stage, and were told if try didn't buy something to drink they'd be kicked out... I don't know why this place was part of the pub crawl, they were just dodgy and rude! When we left there we said goodbye to our Danish friends, and decided not to go to the club, and hung out with the drunk Swede and a group of Spanish guys we'd made friends with. We walked down the street, had a good joke and a laugh and got some pizza, then our Swedish friend, who we still don't know the name of... Discovered he had lost his wallet... So we retraced our steps a bit and Shawn found it on the sidewalk that Swedish guy had been sitting on! Everyone was pretty stoked that it got found and promptly lifted Shawn up and threw him in the air in celebration! After that we said goodbye to everyone and made the trek back out to our hostel and went to bed.
