Kya Travels
We woke up this morning and went for a walk down to the Leidseplein to find some lunch. I was looking for sushi, but they weren't open yet, so we kept walking around, and stopped at a place with a guy out the front who convinced us with his specials! It was like a mexican/steak house, and the boys ordered steak and I got fajitas. We had a good chat to the guy there, Eddie, as well as one of the other workers, who had a lot to say about politics, and Amsterdam in general. Eddie gave us a recommendation of a coffeeshop and brand of smoke that he gets, so we thought... When in Amsterdam! We walked around the corner to the coffeeshop, Rookies, (very fitting name!), and ordered a Northern Lights. We smoked a bit of it in the coffeeshop then went for a walk up the road to the massive park, Vondelpark, and lay down on the grass in the shade. There were some weird, trippy kinda things going on in my head, but overall it wasn't that great and it mostly made us super sleepy... The main thing I noticed was that random people's voices would come through really loud, then after a while someone else's would... And I thought they were speaking Dutch, but for some reason my brain thought I could understand it, then after a while I realized they were speaking English... Random... It made all of us really tired which was a bit disappointing, so we got up and went to head back to the hostel. As we were walking back, we passed the part of town where a lot of museums are, called the museumplein, and they had the big I amsterdam sign, with a big paddling pool with sculptures in it. We sat on the edge of that with our legs in the water for a bit, trying to cool off a bit, and after a bit of a wade we walked back to the hostel and went for a sleep. When we woke up later that afternoon, Darren and I went for a walk. Lyle wanted to keep sleeping cos he was still feeling it a bit, so we walked into the centre of town to have a look at canal cruises and see if there was something we could jump on. None of the cruises jumped out at us, they all seemed pretty similar and very touristy rather than nice and relaxing, so instead we went for a walk around the streets. We walked through lots of little streets that were full of restaurants, bars and coffeeshops. And bikes of course! We passed a few places that we might like to go to, then as we walked around we walked through the red light district. Well actually the whole area was the red light district, but it seemed like this one street was the one with all the prostitutes! It was still quite early so there weren't many girls out yet, but you could see the windows and curtains where they would be later in the night. We passed two or three girls at the end, who didn't seem very excited, and were even on their phones! Maybe later will be better! After a bit we retraced our steps to find a sushi place we had passed earlier, and sat down for a meal there. Yum! I haven't had sushi in ages! After dinner we walked back out of the red light district and walked past a place called the Sex Museum. It was only €4 entry, so we thought we'd check it out. It wasn't too big a place, but it was filled with lots of pictures and sculptures and artifacts from ancient civilizations, all sex related. It was good for a laugh. There was an animated statue that flashed us, and a giant penis chair, that I got a photo of Darren sitting on, they had a porn room, and exhibitions on certain sex symbols, like Marilyn Munroe and a few others. They had everything you could think of, it was pretty amusing. We walked back to the hostel after that and went to go into a coffeeshop nearby, Yellow Mellow, to finish our smoke before bed, but were told that we couldn't stay unless we bought something to smoke. We had been told that as long as we bought a drink you could smoke your own stuff at coffeeshops, so we left, and as we did, the guy that told us that was having a laugh with his coworker, so we think he may have been just being a bit of a dick, because we're tourists. The next day we found out it was illegal to turn us away like that, when we were prepared to buy a drink, so that was a bit annoying. Oh well. So we grabbed a drink from a takeaway place up the road and went to sit on the grass in the weteringcircuit up the road where we had the rest of the smoke then headed back to the hostel for a cold shower, then went to bed.
