Kya Travels
I had an alarm set this morning so we could get up early and actually do something, and I tried my best not to snooze it, but failed. So after a sleep in we got up and had a chat to Marko, who gave us some directions and told us to be back at 4 so he could show us something. So we walked through the old town and out the gates where we stopped at the tourist info centre for bus times to Perast. The next bus wasn't for an hour so we went back into the old town and went to the restaurant Astoria that we'd gone to the other day. We had some lunch there, then realised what time it was and quickly paid before rushing down to the bus stop! There wasn't actually a bus stop, but there were heaps of people waiting in one spot so we waited with them then hopped on the bus. We had a chat to an older Aussie guy who was on the bus and he was telling us all about his travels and about the little house he'd bought in Kotor that he was doing up. He got off and we kept going for a little while then eventually got into Perast. It was a tiny little town on the edge of the bay of Kotor, and we walked along the waterfront. It was a very quiet, tranquil and beautiful place, and there were a few restaurants that had their tables and chairs literally on the edge of the water which was pretty cool. There were amazing views out over the water and of the surrounding mountains, and there were two little islands just out from Perast, which had a church each on them! One was surrounded by trees and was a natural island and the other was a man made island. They looked pretty cool, and there were taxi boats going to and from them all the time. We kept walking to the other end of town (which wasn't very far!) then went down to their 'beach'. By beach I mean the 15ish meters of rocky shore they had! We had a chat with a couple of locals who were down there getting some sun, then got our brave faces on and went for a swim! The water was pretty cold, but it didn't take long to get used to it. And the coolest part was that there were fish EVERYWHERE! It was so cool! They were literally swimming around our legs, it was awesome. We lazed around in the sun for a while after that and chatted with the local guys a bit more then slowly made our way back through the town. You could lose hours in this little place, time seems to stand still, and the atmosphere is so relaxed. We grabbed an ice cream each on our way through, then made our way back to the bus stop. We got the bus back to Kotor and went back to the hostel. We said hi to Kokolo then went to change out of our wet clothes, then we went out again with Marko. We walked through town a bit and went to his car, then we started to head out of Kotor. We stopped at a petrol station for petrol and beers then started our drive up the side of a mountain! The road wound up and down, zigzagging up the side of this massive mountain, Mount Lovćen, and the view just kept getting more and more amazing! We drove higher and higher, for about an hour, until we were higher than most of the other mountains around, and had a spectacular view over almost the entire bay of Kotor! We turned off the road and started winding our way up the other side of the mountain, where all the fields were full of the amazing colors of autumn. Eventually we made it to the top, where only one mountain was higher than us and we came to a giant monument at the top of the mountain, which was the grave of one of Montenegro's leaders, Njegos, who died in about 1850. We walked up the massive tunnel and up 500 stairs to the top then went in to the memorial, feeling very puffed! They had huge statues out the front which were almost Egyptian looking, then we went into a small room with a giant statue of Njegos, This was one of the echoeyest (yes, that's a word!) rooms I've ever been in, it was even hard to understand anyone talking as it all echoed around so much! From there we went around the back and downstairs to where they had his actual tomb then went out the back of the memorial where they had a platform on the mountain with amazing views over what seemed like all of Montenegro! It was so pretty, especially with all the autumn trees covering the mountains, and the sun setting next to the one higher mountain in the area. It was so nice! We made our way back down all the stairs and had a chat with some Germans down the bottom who had stayed in our hostel, so knew Marko, then we jumped back in the car and started making our way back down the mountain. We stopped on the other side of the mountain where they had a bunch of picnic tables on the edge of the cliff with absolutely amazing views over the bay of Kotor. It was here that we had our beers from earlier and watched the rest of the sunset going down over the ocean. It was so nice. We got a few photos there, then made the drive back down the side of the mountain and headed back into Kotor and to the hostel. We walked past the souvenir shop from last night and had a chat with the girls there, then after dropping back into the hostel we headed out to find some 'sarma' for dinner, which is apparently a Montenegrin specialty. They didn't have the dish at the place we'd been told about, so went back to the souvenir shop to chat and got directions to another place that had Sarma on their menu. So we walked out of the old town and along the waterfront for about 15 minutes until we came to a place called Café del Mare. We got a seat, ordered some drinks, then went to order our mains and they had no sarma! And they also had very bad English! So with the help of a guy from another table who spoke English well we ordered some food and had an ok meal, nothing special! After dinner we headed back to the hostel and said hi to Kokolo and Marko before heading across the road to a pub called Evergreen, where the same guy from last night was playing covers on his guitar. We went just for 'one beer' and ended up staying all night! Marko joined us for some drinks and we had a chat with the next table which was full of Aussies, Kiwis, English and South Africans. We sang along to the music with them, then the next table started joining in, and one of the guys was 'cheersing' so hard that he kept breaking people's glasses, then his friend kept buying beer and topping up everyone's drinks! So there were many many drinks and lots of fun and music shared between everyone! Eventually, some time after the music had finished, we decided to head off and stopped by a pizza place for a pizza slice (which was served topped with ketchup and mayonnaise!) then headed back to the hostel and went to bed.
