Kya Travels
After a sleep in today, I went out to reception where I fixed up our bill for the accommodation and got our passports back, then chilled on the bed for a while using the wifi until Darren woke up. When we were both ready, we went for a walk through the town. It was a really pretty place, and was kind of like stepping back in time, with its winding cobblestone roads and characteristic medieval houses and shop fronts lining the streets. And tourists everywhere! There seemed to be an abundance of Asian tour groups, probably on day trips through the place, all in huge groups! We stopped to exchange the rest of our Hungarian florints into Czech korunas then kept walking slowly down the street. We crossed one of the bridges that span the river that winds through the little town, then spotted a sign for a vegetarian restaurant! Yay! So we went in there to get some lunch. It was a nice quiet little place, with dim lights and natural furniture, and the waiter was so happy and excited, and seemed to just love his job! Darren got a curry and I got some chili beans (which weren't very chili!) and they were both delicious. After lunch we thanked the waiter and headed back off down the street. We had a look in a cd store, and had a chat with the owner there, bought some postcards then kept walking. We had just arrived at the main town square when it started to rain. By the time we got to the other side of the square it had started absolutely pouring down! It all happened so quick! After being reminded of how much we don't like "umbrella people", when we almost lost our eyes about three or four times, we headed into what we thought looked like a pub. It turned out to be more of a restaurant, but it was warm and dry in there, so we sat down and got a beer to share. By the time we finished, we popped our heads back outside, and the rain had stopped, and it was almost nice out again! Crazy weather! So we started wandering back in the direction of the hostel. When we got to the castle, we decided we might go and at least see how much it is to get in, so we wandered up through the gates and walked along checking it out. There was no part that looked like charging us, so we just kept walking through the outdoor corridors and alleyways. It had some pretty cool architecture, and some amazing views along the way, and as we headed up the top there was a steep climb up to the castle gardens. There was a section of very neat manicured hedges, and further up was a revolving amphitheater. I don't know what they use it for, but it was a giant viewing stand on a big concrete circle, which I assume spins around. Maybe it's used for garden plays? We wandered back past the hedgey section and past a big fountain and kept going down. There was a big hollow tree trunk set up as a decoration, so I climbed in for a photo, trying not to climb in the puddles! Then we headed back down towards the castle. We walked back along the bridges and through the alleys and as we came out over the bridge at the front gate, I happened to look down, and saw a bear! A real live bear! Who would've thought Cesky Krumlov's castle would have its own resident bears! Crazy! So after watching him wander around his enclosure, looking kind of bored and sad, we headed back to the hostel. We went into the adjoining restaurant, Hospoda99, for a drink, and got talking to a table of Aussies and Kiwis, also staying at the hostel. After a couple of drinks there we decided to head out to a little pub someone recommended, so we set off together and went to High Hopes. There were no other customers when we walked in, and after about 2 minutes in there, we left too, to get some food before having anything more to drink! I felt a bit sorry for the bartender! We headed around the corner to Papas restaurant, which was an Italian place and although the place was full, they said we could have a reserved table if we were out in one hour when the reservation was! So we sat down and ordered as quick as we could! We all got another beer each, and I got an absolutely delicious baked potato with spinach and mushrooms. Mmmmmm! After our hour was up, and our bellies were full, we left and went back over to High Hopes, which had quite a few people now. We got a table and a drink and chilled out there, chatting and listening to the good music the bartender was playing! He played some Pearl Jam and Darren went and had a chat with him about the new album and got his email to send him some songs that had leaked from it. As the night went on, our group became quite drunk and rowdy, and we played some drinking games, and cheered every person who entered the bar! We had heaps of drinks and shots and had a good chat with everyone, including a Czech couple who were visiting the town as well. Eventually Darren and I were drunk enough, so we said goodbye, made plans to meet up the next day, and left. As we walked home, we listened to a new Pearl Jam song that Darren had just downloaded while we were in the bar, which was pretty mellow but really nice, then when we got back to the hostel, we went to bed.
