We headed to Isla Mujeres after being woken up by loud banging and crashing outside, the builders had started to demolish the wall opposite in the hostel which meant we had to go carefully down the stairs and tread over a load of rubble and bricks to get out of our room. When explaining to the receptionist that it was really dangerous and no one had warned us of the building work she was very rude and uninterested so we moved our bags to a hostel down the road where we would return on Sunday. She was by far the most unfriendly staff of all the hostels we've stayed in!
The short ferry ride to Isla Mujeres was brightened by a cheery man singing, dancing and playing the guitar. We found our hostel Poc Na a short walk from the pier, the only hostel on the island so very popular with backpackers and its right by the nicest beach on the island. Unfortunately it was cloudy and windy so not great weather for the beach so we had a wander around and found a nice café (which was also a book shop) for lunch. It started raining whilst we were sitting by the open window, everything looked very grey and miserable. Despite this the island had a lot of character, with small streets with mostly golf carts rather than cars and brightly coloured buildings - a nice escape from Cancún! When it stopped raining we went out the back of the hostel to relax on the hammocks where I dozed off. Nathan likes to highlight the fact that more people die from coconuts dropping on their heads than from sharks, luckily none fell on me whilst I was asleep! Later on in the afternoon it brightened up so we got a couple of ice cold coronas and sat on the beach. The island livened up at night, the small pedestrian only streets near our hostel were bustling with people and nice looking bars and restaurants. We found Nash's Indo-Mex restaurant and had a delicious curry for two - beef and spinach, chicken in red sauce, vegetable curry and lentils. We went to a couple of bars before heading back to the hostel for some live music, which was a guy on drums and another singing and playing an electric key board. Nathan wasn't keen and thought it was 'a bit of a racket' but I was quite impressed. After the music the hostel opened up the bar on the beach where we celebrated our final night.
