I overslept this morning so awoke to Kat knocking on my door 5 minutes before we had to get to the tour agents for our snorkelling trip. Luckily 'Mexican time' meant we weren't late so met the rest of our group and headed to the bus to the port.
Kat was like a little child at Christmas on the journey out, even though it was a little choppy! The trip took around an hour, however we had some Mexican sisters to keep us entertained with there whooping and screaming. The boat sent one man flying across the deck at one point. But finally we reached our destination. On our arrival 4 massive manta rays swam past. We quickly got ready as the boat pulled up next to a massive whale shark. We weren't quite prepared for the size of the sharks. We were only allowed two people in at a time so Kat and I waited our turn. The sharks are partially blind but can sense you so it's a case of trying to wait for one then following it. We stayed in for around 15 minutes at a time and went in 4 times. The waves were big and it was hard work keeping up. They had the largest mouths I've ever seen and one even took a liking to Kat as it came towards her with its jaws wide apart!
We were lucky as not everyone in our boat wanted to go in so we got more time in the water! Everyone felt pretty ill when on the boat as the fumes were overwhelming. A few people were sick (Kat :p) but that didn't deter them. The experience being next to these giant beasts was amazing. It was also a good final snorkelling trip for us, especially Kat as it built up in difficulty during the trip! On our final snorkel we had the manta rays swim past us again which are really so amazing. The whole trip was a highlight for both of us! We then had to endure an hour rocky trip back! On the way back we stopped on playa Norte on Isla mujeres and had ceviche and beers in the water! It was really nice and I'm very glad I tried ceviche again after my terrible one in Peru last year!
We then got dropped off back on mainland Mexico and got a bus back to our taxi. We felt a lot better being back on dry land. That night we got a lovely meal and prepared for returning to Isla mujeres the next day to explore the island some more!
