Had our first bush camp of the trip about 10 km's outside of the aboriginal community of Kintore. Found a Telstra communications tower off the road to camp around as the ground there is cleared from bushes and spinafex. Kids had another quick lesson on dangers of the bush before they helped collect firewood for the fire. Heated up our sweet curry for dinner, lucky we were hungry as it wasn't as nice as it could have been. I had cooked up a massive batch so we get to have it again tonight ;)
A quick pack up of camp in the morning and breaky in the car and we are back on the road again.
Seen a herd of camels, one was on the road and casually walked off as we passed. Shaun was eagerly wanting to get his bow out.
We stopped at the WA border for photos and Shaun and Garry decided to go for a drive back camel spotting.
Further down the road we noticed a trail of water behind Garry's camper and after checking it out they found a rock had busted a hose fitting on his water tank. We think they have lost a bit of water. It will need more repairs when we stop this arvo.
Bummed I missed the original site of Len Beadell's ration truck. His truck caught on fire in 1960 during the construction of the Gary Junction road and supplied food etc to people in the area.
Pulled into the aboriginal community of Kiwirrkurra to fuel up but unfortunately it looked as though everybody had left town and the general store was shut. Turned out the shop was shut for lunch and re-opened at 2pm. It was now 11.30 WA time so we had a bit of a wait :( Decided to have some lunch while waiting, so found a cement slab in the shade to make lunch. The local stray dogs soon found us hoping for some lunch as well.
Turned out they operate on NT time (we were told it was because there head office was in NT) so shortly after lunch the store opened up and we were able to fuel up @ $2.80/L. This is also when the town came alive. We also learnt that the slab we stopped on was where the original shop was before it got burnt down.
Here I also found Len's truck! So after a quick photo stop we were on the road again :)
At around 4.30 WA time we finally found a bit of a clearing to make camp for the night, about 60 km's west of Jupiter Well. Kids did a great job collecting all the firewood for the night.
Discovered even more red dust inside camper this time! A couple of the cupboards have a very thick layer inside :( Shaun has taped up the vents and all around where the roof overlaps the campers body... hard to say if its helping or not ;)
The suspension on the camper is getting a good work out, apparently they are just about b*****ed!
Also discovered the 12v lights in camper aren't working.
Just as well we have 2 weeks coming up at coral bay, I think we will need that time to do any repairs and give the camper a good clean out!!
