To kick off our Tasmanian tour we started off with the Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) in Hobart. Everyone we talked to raved about the experience and told us that it was something we couldn't miss, so we figured it was a good place to start.
Over breakfast we did our research and decided to book our ferry tickets for this afternoon. The ferry is a large catamaran painted in grey cammo and done up inside like a swanky lounge. You have the option on sitting on nice leather loungers or stylistic sheep statues (or if you pay the big bucks you sit in the posh pit and drink champagne) .
Once up the river at the museum we explored the grounds a little. There were a bunch of food vendors and performers set up on the lawn giving it some really cool hippy/chill out vibes. It was the perfect afternoon with the sun shining to warm up the wind coming off the bay.
After a little exploring, we went inside. The exhibits were pretty amazing. While I'm not really a connoisseur of modern art, our little electronic guides gave us lots on interesting information and made most of the exhibits super accessible.
We saw the regular exhibits as well as the current special one by Gilbert and George. Their stuff was super interesting! They used weird life object and substances to create larger than life pieces that were super colourful, stimulating, and appealing. Very Warhol-esque in some ways.
After our tour, we headed up top again to do a tasting at the brewery and winery. I tasted the beer and the ladies split a wine tasting, but our bartender was super friendly and generous with his pours so I'm sure we got our money's worth.
Overall it was a super cool day and a really fun activity. Not something that I would normally do, but I'm definitely not regretting doing it. It was an awesome way to spend Easter Sunday!
A quote from one of the recorded interviews really stuck with me from the Gilbert and George exhibit. They said it was "Art about life, rather than art about art" and I think that's why I thought it was so cool and easy to connect with. If you ever get the chance to visit Hobart, I would definitely suggest taking a day to do Mona.
Lots more Tassie updates to come. Stay lively and weird. Happy Easter!
