So, I spent the last four days in Denver. I had meetings Friday and Saturday, and then booked a couple extra days to check out the city. Our sport management conference is here in June, so I I wanted to check out the city and see what kind of fun I can have when I've got a crew to explore with. Here's my report.
Firstly, Denver is known as the "Mile High City" because of its altitude. I didn't think this would affect me much as I wasn't doing any kind of crazy activities…boy I was wrong. I noticed every time I sped up my pace to pass someone on the street that I would get all weezey. The worst was when I decided to take the massive set of stairs instead of the escalator at the airport - I tried to chat with someone at the top and I was literally out of breath. Needless to say, I learned to pace myself and not overestmate my sea-level specific athletic prowess.
In terms of tourist things, Denver is a pretty cool city. I didn't have a ton of time to get into the activities, but I snapped a picture on the mile high marker at the state capital building (read "joining the mile high club" - see featured photo) and took an afternoon to check out the museum of Colorado history (decent museum, $10 for students, the ski jump activity was worth the $10). It was also pretty sweet to just wander around the civic centre area and the 16th Street Mall (or take the free shuttle if the altitude is getting to you). There was definitely no shortage of awesome architecture and cool city sights to check out.
My two favourite things about the city were easily the people and the beer. There was a surprisingly friendly vibe about the city - everywhere I went locals and tourists alike were eager to chat. There is also a huge craft been scene in the city. Too many breweries and tap houses to check out in just four days. But every establishment I visited, I was pleased to make friends and chat whether if was over lunch or a late night bevvy.
Here's a few spots I visited and why you should as well if you ever get a chance:
1 - Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery - super cool brewery/pub right in the 16th Street Mall. Tons of great beers and the friendliest bar staff and patrons. I had so many great conversations here that I went back a second day to make more friends.
2 - Great Divide Brewing Co.- A few blocks north(ish) from the city centre but a very cool spot with some interesting brews. Smaller and quieter but also quirkier and a bit more of an adventure.
3 - Wynkoop Brewing Company- Directly across from Union Station so a scenic and very attractive venue. This one was a little bit more upscale but still a great spot. I had lunch here and would totally go back.
4 - The Yard House - This one is in the bottom of the Sheraton in the 16th St Mall. Not a brewery but this place has the longest bank of taps that I have ever seen. Also (as per the name) you can get drinks in "yard" size. Definitely worth checking out with a group who are looking to have a fun night.
The big thing I didn't do was get up to the mountains. I thought about doing it on my last day but then decided to wait until I had a crew to go with. I wasn't super keep on getting lost on a trail somewhere without someone to enjoy it with. It will definitely be on the itinerary in June though.
Overall it was a great trip. I am definitely looking forward to getting back in June and I will definitely be planning and extended visit again and spending some time hiking and having a real adventure. Accepting suggestions for hike, hills, and sights not to miss, as well as travel partners.
