Road to Pai
Yesterday it was time to leave Chiang Mai and continue our adventure north. We made our way to the bus station and got tickets to get us to Pai. Pai is only 134km away from Chiang Mai. That being said it is all mountain roads and the bus ride takes four hours!!
We loaded up onto our bus.....the old old small bus at platform 13 to Pai. I was in the aisle seat because I couldn't fit in the seat. I managed to squeeze one leg into the seat for part of the drive. My back and butt were half on the seat. It was pretty s***ty at first until we got our system figured out. I was right beside the door which remained open the whole drive so I was afraid to fall asleep seeing as I was partially out of my seat. I figured if I fell asleep i would end up out the door and down the side of the mountain. Niki and I linked arms so I could sleep safely and it worked out well. I had a couple small naps. The drive was beautiful despite being cramped. It was a very slow pace and constant curves up and down the whole time. Our old bus struggled and blew very very hot air at our feet. In the end we made it safe and sound.
The bus station in Pai is luckily right in town so we were able to walk to a hostel and get a room. We are staying at a place called edible jazz. It is a cool little bar and has wooden "bungalows".
Once we checked in we went for dinner at a falafel place. It was great and cheap!
We wandered the street market for awhile then went back to our jazz bar. We hung out here for the rest of the night enjoying the live band, playing cards, and drinking some sang som Thai rum.
Today we decided to do nothing at all for a change. Pai is a touristy place as I'm sure almost everywhere in Thailand is now. Even though it is touristy it is a really cool place. Pai is a hippy haven for local dreadlock wearing Thais and travelers. There are lots of cool shops and a market that is set up every night on the main street. There are lots of cool relaxing bars and coffee shops all over too.
Today we wandered for awhile and chilled at out guest houses jazz bar. They have a big tv and put on random movies during the day. Today we watched part of Billy Elliott and all of into the wild. Into the wild is an awesome movie!
After our hard day of doing nothing it was back to more wandering and dinner. We checked out the night market for awhile then came back to catch the live music at our bar. Now it will be more chill time here, snack time for some street food and bed time.
Tomorrow we plan on getting some bikes and spending the day riding around the outskirts of Pai. There are some cool water falls and hot springs to check out.
