Bangkok day 3
Today was a pretty awesome day. We left our guest house around 830 and grabbed some pineapple and a fruit shake from the amazing street vendors. From here we left our home of Khao San Road and went to the pier. We caught a boat up the Chao Phraya River to a large market. Here we wandered around for a long time taking pictures and exploring. The market had everything from clothes, fruits and vegetables, tons of fish and meat sitting out in the open hot air and gross stuff like eels, frogs, and pig heads. It was pretty crazy to see and quite the experience.
After the market we caught the boat again back down the river a couple stops passed ours and walked around to find the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaeo. This place was crazy! It is a massive complex from 1782 to provide a resting place for the sacred Emerald Buddha and a residence for the king.
The complex was mind boggling. Everything almost looked fake. It is finished with tons of tiny bright glass tiles, ceramics, and gold coated wood. It is definitely something from a fairy tale but in a totally different way than Prague. We walked around inside for two and a half hours. Every time we thought we were finished, the next area would open up a whole new place to explore.
Once we were finished up inside we set off to our next temple called Wat Phra Chetuphon. This temple is famous for it's massive Reclining Buddha and traditional medicine school that specializes in Thai massage. The 46 m (150 foot) long Buddha fills the whole temple. The massive Buddah's feet are finished in mother of pearl images representing the 108 lakshanas, which are the auspicious signs of the true Buddha. The reclining Buddha is the main attraction of the area but it is also a large complex of temples and gardens. Inside another temple is a bronze meditating Buddha salvaged from Ayutthaya. There was also a medical pavilion with stone plaques showing pressure points and massage points on the body.
We left this area tired and templed out for the day. We took a tuk tuk back to our street had a beer and tried to figure out if any movie theatres were nearby and playing anything worthwhile. Lonely planet recommended to see a show in Bangkok because it is the only country where you can get "VIP" luxurious seats and we were tired so we looked into it. There was nothing playing that we wanted to see so... We headed down the street and got massages! Niki and I had back, shoulder, and neck massages and Michelle and Jason had traditional Thai massages. It was awesome! After the massage we were given tea and relaxed for a bit. We felt hungry after our relaxation and Niki spotted an Indian restaurant on our street. We decided to check it out and had some pretty decent food.
Once full we came back and crashed! It was a pretty fun day filled with lots of awesome sights, a good amount of walking, and some great relaxation to end the night!!
