I posted a blog from Khao Sok, day one of getting to Bangkok, and this one all tonight so check them all out. Blog overload I know buy we don't have reliable Internet so I have to post them all when I can!
Bangkok day 2
This morning we woke up and made a rough plan for our trip north. In the meantime, Jason had gone to the Indonesian embassy to get a visa for his travels later on. Once he was back we set out for a walk to check out a little Bangkok daytime action. We happened upon the best street meat ever!! It was chicken roasted over a fire and once it was cooked the lady used a massive meat cleaver to cut it into bits. Michelle and niki had chili sauce poured over theirs - the chicken is put into a little plastic bag with the sauce all over it and all this is complimented with a bag of sticky rice which is eaten by hand. Mmm!! The stall lady was so sweet - she even washed our hands after with a plastic bottle of water over a sewer grate lol and then gave me a towel to dry my hands! All this for the equivalent of $1.50 canadian! Later on during our walk we had the strangest thing happen. A random guy stopped me showing me the newspaper from today showing us flooding in the south of Thailand and talked to us for awhile. Then he showed us some places on our map to check out and said we could have a tuk tuk take us to them for only 20 baht, less than a Canadian dollar. A tuk tuk is like a motorcycle in a sense. It is a three wheeler with a canvas roof and a bench seat in the back. We were skeptical but the guy was cool so we thought we would give it a shot because the worst that could happen would be someone trying to sell us suits for cheap in a back alley! So we cruised down the street and stopped at a spot that looked far from touristy. We were surprised when he showed us the way to a 500 year old Buddhist temple we were able to go into and take pictures inside of a large beautiful Buddha statue. Our next stop was a "tourist information centre" that we tried to opt out of. Clearly not an option. We thought we would be pressured hardcore into buying something. We walked in the door and sat down. We told them we wanted one way tickets somewhere and they told us they only have packages and that was it. Our driver seemed a bit pissed we were out so fast so we figure he must get a cut of sales he brings to the place. Nevertheless he took us next to a big temple with a massive outdoor Buddha. We looked around this area for around half an hour. When we went back to where he was waiting for us....he was nowhere to be seen. We looked around and then another tuk tuk driver showed up and told us our driver was in an accident and left because his tuk tuk was banged up and couldn't take us back. We were so confused considering we hadn't payed him a cent yet and he was gone. We couldn't see him being in an accident seeing as how he parked on the side of the road away from all the busy traffic. I think he didn't think it was worth it to keep driving us around for next to nothing when he could find other tourists to agree to a higher rate. Luckily we had a map and were not too far from the street our hostel is on. We decided to walk and found our way no problem. Once we were back to familiar territory we continued walking from there. We found a restaurant with free wifi and figured it was a great place to eat considering we had no luck finding good wifi elsewhere. We ate delicious food and had some beer and hung out using the Internet and visiting.
Bangkok seems like a great town. We heard it was a big dirty city but what we have seen of it is nice. It has a small town feel and a lot of tourists. We are looking forward to real Thailand but Bangkok is a pretty chill place so far!
