Our last day did not go as we expected. We went to one part of the city walls of Rome at Porta Maggiore and Porta San Sebastiano. It is quite a sight to see it in between the normal buildings, like it does not belong there at all. The first Porta was only the gate itself in between the tram rails. While we walked to Porta Maggiore, we came across the Scala Sancta and the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano. After those, we wanted to go to the City Wall Museum to climb the wall and see an overview of the wall in the city. When we came there we found a sign on the door saying it was closed due to renovations. We had no interest in the little museum itself so we continued our walk through a park to Domus Aurea, the Golden house of Emperor Nero who lived quite an expensive life (like making a golden house and creating his own lake) which his successors destroyed in turn when they ruled. The Colosseum was build on top of the lake he constructed for example and the house was stripped of it's gold. Unfortunately there was another sign at the entrance that it was closed for renovations. That was quite disappointing because from what we could see from the outside it was very promising... So besides a nice walk we did not see much today. We finished quite early so we went to eat something while enjoying the last view of the Colosseum before we went back to our hotel to get our bags and continued to the train that took us to the airport.
Reflecting on our trip, we learned that Italians are very relaxed in their ways, (although they sound very hectic while talking) unless you come across them in their car! They can park their car anywhere, even when there is no parking space left and even in the middle of the street. Smart cars are very populair in Rome because of their small size. Noise is apparently not a problem, because at one o'clock there are still very noisy street-cleaning cars driving around. They put Mozarella on everything, we weren't able to find any other cheese. Whole-wheat bread is nowhere to be found either, they only eat white bread without crusts. Although the Italian cuisine is very tasty, we can't eat like Italians do with their multiple courses. It's just too much! Their icecreams make up for it though!
