Today is the last day of our epic road trip and this fills me with sadness. However, I know more adventure awaits. Still, the thought of leaving the team hurts a little bit.
We leave the hostel at 8am and breakfast in the van for the last time while listening to some trip classics. It's a great drive to San Fran. Pass by Oakland (apparently pretty rough), see some almond trees which look like cherry blossoms - stretches and stretches of them. They call California the home of fruit and nuts. They grow alot of both obviously but I think the nuts more refer to the residents of Venice beach. Onwards to the Bay Bridge. Stopped on Treasure Island for our last wander and group photo opportunity. Great view of the city and the Golden Gate Bridge. Picked some flowers for our hair, which obviously you must wear when in San Francisco.
Continued into the city and Casey let us off near Union Square, the rest of the group where staying in various places around here. After bidding our fantastic tour guide farewll we chucked our stuff in Hings hotel room as were staying further out and we all went for lunch togther. Tried to get a cable car to fisherman's wharf but they were heaving and two full ones shot past so we decided to walk. OH MY it's a steep kind of place. Hills that make your calves burn.
It was a beautiful day so it was super busy down by the sea. We got some tasty fish and chips and had a walk about. Spent an hour or so there but then decided to cut loose to head out to Jims - a friend of Rhonas uncles who kindly allowed us to stay. He lived out in the sunset district so had to bus it out to him. Bid farewell to the team. Emotional. Walked back, picked up our stuff and navigated ourselves to Market Street to catch the bus. Our bus crashed. We had to get off and await the next one. We were a bit unsure of exactly where we were going/what stop to get off at but pretty much lucked out and managed to find his place easy enough. Jim was great, super friendly and welcoming and pointed us in the direction of a Mexican place nearby for some scran. That place was fantastic. People and food were way above par. Some lad decides to invite himself to our table and he was pretty hilarious. Didn't realise how drunk he was initially but he was away. He liked to refer to us as "Scottish f***s"...in a nice way. Returned to Jims after a few mexican beers and some banter. He gave us a wee list of reccomendations of things to see the following day as he was working. All sounded brilliant but lots to squeeze in in our one full day in the city. Bed time.
