Little Kirsty Ventures to Pastures New
Ahh- apologies for the lack of postcards from Hong Kong. I can only hop on this comp in the odd second I'm not out shopping!! So here goes on the update- after Disney, Aman and I headed for "The Peak", which is a huge hill overlooking Hong Kong. We took the bus up a majorly windy road for about 20mins and the view was pretty friggin awesome on the way up, but as we got higher, we were emersed in cloud- gutted. So there was a lack of decent pics taken at the top. I was becoming slightly miffed with my new camera because the battery decided to cut out when i attempted to take a pic of cloudy Hong Kong below. Soo, after a disappointing visit, we headed back to the centre of Hong Kong. Caught a bus and ended up at the craziest market ever! Was utterly insane. Completely packed and they were selling flowers and blow up plastic things left right and centre. The Chinese are mental! They all had wigs on and big blow up things and were basically just selling crazy tack! Was absolute banter to watch tho- we got some amusing pics. Aman got some dodgie Hot+sour soup, I gota cup of corn and we headed back to Mong Kok to go to the Lady's market. Glennie- you'll be proud of me- I bought some fake hair- yes, electric blue fake hair. Well actually, I have a feeling it's real- haha! It's great bartering with Chinese people- they get soo angry! Where as in Malaysia it's all happy and a laugh- here it's like life or death!!
On Sunday we called up the Hong Kong travel board, who suggested we go see a Dragon Dance at a hotel- which we did. Was pretty good but the one at our school was pretty amazing as well. Since it was a clear day, we then decided to go up to the "Peak" again to get a better view- this time in daylight. It was absolutely packed!! The que for the tram was hours long so we just gave in and gota taxi. Was worth it tho- the view was fab and we decided to wait a little longer for the sun to go down and we got some great pics of Hong Kong in the dark with the sky lit up with all of the neon lights. Tis exaclty like the pic on this website. Really impressive. We got the bus back down, then hopped on the "Star Ferry". We got on just in time to watch the Laser Show above the city. Looks too cool- like a lazer show projected from the rooftops and reflecting off the water in the harbour. We arrived just in time for the biig parade that was being held to celebrate Chinese New Year. Unfortunately every single person in Hong Kong decided to come onto the street to watch it. So the streets were chaos. Like we couldn't move an inch. Was far too cramped for my liking, Couldn't see a thing. So ended up giving in and leaving- I just had really scary images of there being a mad rush and getting crushed, cos there was like nowhere to run if that happened. Soo. headed back to Mong Kok to chill out. Had a goood sleep in on Monday, then got the train to "Ocean Park". I have to say, it topped Disney by a mile. Was rockin. Saw the dolphin show- including sea lions- they were soo cool! Like the sea lions did mouth to mouth with one of the trainers, quite amusing. Saw the Giant Chinese Panda- although that was a little depressing cos they hada tiny enclosure, which was viewed by roudy visitors and the pandas had nowhere to hide or get away from the noise. We also went on a decent rollercoaster, saw the funniest goldfish ever- Glennie- wish you were there! Too funny for words- total REJECT goldfish!! Went to a butterfly farm which was so peaceful compared to the manic park surrounding it- lots of flutterbyes flying everywhere around us- was niice. We saw an ice show- which was slightly random, like a beautiful girl dancing, then random chinese clowns n stuff bringing her act down. But was good. Also got our photo taken with a Chinese dude in traditional dress. We got the bus back from ocean park and headed straight away for a spot to watch the fireworks display. Luckily we got there about 1 hr 1/2 early cos the place was already mobbed. Tis just mental how many people there are in Hong Kong- tis faar too cramped but luckily Aman and I found somewhere to sit and just chatted while the crowd grew around us. It was well worth the wait. The fireworks were set off across the water, over some of the main tower blocks and the lights reflected in the glass of every other building and in the water. I was worried that the "bang" of each firework would smash some of the building's glass cos the fireworks were soo huge and loud. Was prob the longest display I've ever seen. Went on for more than 1/2 hr- was fab. Was so funny tho- Chinese people seem to be amazed so easily- like entire crowd were "ooing" and "ahhing" non stop. Far more so than at the Edinburgh Festival Fireworks display. Aaand- I know this sounds dramatic but a girl passed out behind us in the crowd- I'm sure it was nothing to do with the exitement of the fireworks- but most probably due to the major crush of people. The police were going crazy tho- Aman and I thought something major had happened cos they were dashing about like headless chickens like they'd never seen someone faint before.
Anyyway, headed back to Mong Kok to find Aman some solution for her contact lense cos her eyes were starting to get all fuzzy. Still can't get over that when we got back to Mong Kok, the shopping was just getting started and it was about 11pm!
Aman and I dedicated our final 2 days to shopping. And what a day it's been! Had soo much fun checking out the shops and bartering our asses off. The annoying thing here is that you can't try anything on and they don't do returns anywhere- so you gota be sure it'll fit, and you'll like it. But it's cool cos everythings like 2 quid anyway. Got an oober warm winter jacket for 8 quid, which I'm chuffed with but there's a lack of shoes in our size cos all of the Chinese girls have such teeny feet.
Gona grab some Indian food off the street tonight cos the last time we ate Indian was in Penang and it was goood. There's cookie shops in the train stations here and the cookies are just too yummy for words!
Will have to buy some to take back to KK. Rite- better dash, only got 1 day left here so don't wana waste it on the comp! xx
