So we finally booked a car for our trip down south. We’re going for 4 day and hav booked a car with Backpacker Cars who r actually owned by Thrifty. So after finally sorting that all out we did a walking tour of the main sites of Perth, detailed in one of the tourist brochures we had picked up. So we started off at the General Post Office and Forrest Place. We then headed over to the Perth Cultural Centre where we went into the Art Gallery of WA. We had a wee look round a couple of the exhibitions and there was a really strange one that had all these really life like models of strange looking creatures, it really was very strange! After all that hard work we had to stop off for a wee something to eat. We stopped at this wee bakery and i had a coffee and a chocolate éclair. Couldnt quite finish it but Fiona managed to for me.
From there we headed to the Old Fire Station which was Perths original fire station, opened in 1901! We then saw St Marys Cathedral which is a very strange looking place. One part of the building is done in an old traditional style but the other part is don’t in a very modern way. Both would look ok separately but it just looked a bit strange when they were together on a building. We also saw the Perth Mint which is where they pour the gold and make money i think, it wasn’t open when we were there! From there we had a wee break in Langley Park, which is a really long stretch of green, it apparently used to be an airstrip in the 1920s. It was so nice just to lie out in the sun on the grass!
From there we walked thru the Supreme Court Gardens to the Government House which is where the governor of WA lives. We saw Perth Concert Hall, which is a pretty awful looking building, very concrete, a bit like some of the buildings in Glasgow uni actually, not a fan! We also saw St Andrews Uniting Church and St Georges Cathedral and The Old Deanery.
We then walked down to Barrack Square where we saw the Swan Bells Bell Tower, which was unfortunately closed cause someone was having a wedding reception there. The Barrack Square is on the edge of the water and it was really nice down there. Further towards the centre is the London Court which is Perths only open air shopping arcade. Its a bit weird as they hav it totally decorated in like a tudor style and a bit picture of Henry the 8th half way down. Also saw The Old Perth Boys School, the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, the Cloisters and the Barracks Arch. The Barracks Arch is the only remaining bit of the building that the soldier settlers of the enrolled pensioner forces used as their head quarters. We stopped off at Kings Park which was really nice and relaxing, however we didn’t quite hav enough time to walk around the whole place cause its massive!
On the way back to the hostel we saw His Majestys Theatre and Perth Town Hall. Couldnt believe how much walking we had ended up doing! Was pretty exhausted when we got back to the hostel. Ended up moving rooms because of the bed bugs.
