Saxon Switzerland
Can I start off by saying....WOW WOW WOW!!!!!!!
We visited Saxon Switzerland today. We began by visiting Festung Konigstein, or Konigstein Fortress. The castle dated back to the 15th Century and the views were spectacular!
We then drove through beautiful winding roads through fir tree forests and emerged with wheat fields for as far as the eye could see. I could imagine them all covered with snow.
We were headed to Bastei. There were a number of steps down one way and up another but it was well worth it. The bridge looks like is was floating between the rocks and seemed quite unusual nestled between the fissured rocky landscape. It was quite awesome to see. I even climbed up to the best viewing point high up on one of the rock formations. Boy was it high.
Nelly then led us straight to the autobahn and we flew towards Berlin. Trying to park the car in the allotted car space was quite investing indeed. Each garage spaces (the width of our 2 car garage) actually houses 4 cars!!! There is a mechanical lift, similar to a car transporter truck. You lower the deck, drive your car on and then raise the deck for the cars below to drive in and out (which go underground when the deck is lowered). The only problem was that our beautiful Mich is too tall so she doesn't fit. It was a little scary watching Andrew slowly inch her closer towards the concrete ceiling. But it was decided it was not possible so out she came and is now parked in a spare space on the grounds (that has a tow away sign but I seem to be the only one concerned about that...lol).
This evening we planned out our coming days. It is very difficult to decide when there is so much to do. We have the Berlin Pass which gives us free entry into a lot of interesting places. I think the plan of action is to do the hop-on hop-off bus tomorrow and really get a feel for the place and a better idea of what we want to see.
I can't post this now as we don't have intent (and feeling quite isolated and far away) but I think I will maintain my daily entry....more for me than anything.
Happy days...
