The last of our Moose Tours started today and we headed to Whistler with our driver Cam on the Eric bus. On leaving we had a little tour of Stanley park. Learned a bit about Vancouver and the university area with the nude Reck beach, that Kennys too scared to visit.Saw a man flying a 'build it yourself' helicopter, I'm not usually impressed by this type of thing but he watched it through a mask and it was controlled by a remote. We learnt how they release animals from the Stanley park aquarium into the bay so you frequently see the seals. Also they had a pod of killer whales in the bay randomly, they just have got lost.
So on the way to Whistler, we stopped by Shannon falls, a waterfall that is 365 meters high. Then stopped by a lake for lunch while some of us when up in a wee 4 seater plane for a scenic view, Kenny loved it. Saw cool dragonflies, that just randomly landed on one of the guys flip flops for me to take a picture.
We went to he bungee jump place and watched Toni jump! Not the same kinda of bungee that I had done, as she was attached by the waist. (And not the feet like I was.) We got dropped off in whistler village village for a wee wander around, Then we arrive at the hotel:
HI Whistler Olympic Village. Well this was like no other hostel I have ever seen! This was purpose built for the athletes at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. Absolutely beautiful, clean, safe, comfy beds, class kitchen dining room, pool room, tv room, the washing machine area is like a laundrette with a tv and all, and all this set with views of the mountains; what else could you ask for?!
Decided today since we had spent soo much money on food recently, we'll be sensible and cook. So managed for the next three days to make breakfast lunch and dinner, with each meal costing $2, go us!! Tonight's dinner was included, I had salad for a change and then went out for a few bevvies.
The next day, we said goodbye to the others; me, Kenny and Laura did the peak 2 peak. This is part of the longest gondola system in the world and I between whistler and blackcomb mountains. So went up the gondola of whistler mountain, and to get to the summit we had to use a ski lift (always fun and bring back great memories) and then went along to blackcombe mountain. There were lots of crazy people mountain biking, not for me.
The scenery was absolutely beautiful even saw pink snow!! We did the lakeside loop walk on black combe and I got totally tortured by flys the whole way. I think my arms were more sore than my legs from all the waving around I was doing!!
At the bottom, we treated ourselves to Cows ice-cream, why are we going to do when we leave Canada with no amazing ice-cream??
Got laundry done eventually, woo hoo clean clothes, had some of Kennys speciality pasta and a few Vinos.
The next day...
As he packed a fishing rod, he had to get some fishing in eventually, so the idea was to get the greyhound. At $15 per person, we thought why not hitchhike? Lol. So Kenny made a sign saying 'Squamish' and nervous at crap, we stood at the side of the road and timed it... Two minutes it took to get a lift!! The guy is from Vancouver and worked in construction, so he left us off in Squamish. We wanted to go to 'downtown' and he said there basically wasn't one, just random blocks of shops. So out we jump and into a shop to find out where to find the fishing shop. The lovely lady in the shop printed is out google map directions; 10 mins into walking we figure out the 8 minute time frame was the car route, so it was prob gona take us an hour to walk. So off we go along a highway. Half way along we find our favourite Tim Hortons and stop for a coffee break. Another half hour walk and we reach the fishing shop!! Hey guess what, a fishing shop that doesn't sell fishing licenses and it turns out the shop we got left off at an hour previously, did sell them!! They point us in the direction of where to get a license and off we go again. So while in the hardware shop, we see a guy buying a fly and ask him does he know where to go fishing (the guy in the fishing shop had drawn us a map but let's just say it left lots to the imagination) so the guy waits to show us the way, asking if we had a car, nope, so he takes us with him. So in we get with more randomers, two South Africans and Canadian.
So in Kenny gets to the Manaquan river to catch pink salmon. They were everywhere; to the point of even as we walked through the river, they were swimming around our legs!! I had a day playing photographer and watching the dead fish so the seagull didn't steal it.
Eventually we decide, we've had a great day, time to try to find our way home. Having been really lucky hitch-hiking the first time, we didn't wana spoil it by trying again. So we walk to the greyhound station. The lady sitting there tells us the bus is already an our and a half late, so goodness knows what time it'll show up. So we get to the highway to hitch-hike; stand for 5 minutes and see the greyhound pull in. I have never ran so fast in my life; across a highway and through a restaurant garden, and we make it! Woo hoo. So onto the bus we go, with Kennys headless fish, wrapped up in the trouser leg of his cut offs, then stuffed into his backpack. If only the other people on the bus really knew what the smell was haha
Back at the hostel, Kenny entertained guests with his gutting and cooking of his catch that didn't even fit in the pain and involved borrowing oil and salt of other guests but it was yummy.
The next day, we were picked up by same driver Cam. we spent the morning at the lost lake and lost Kenny!!Saw a garter snake and lots if tiny toads. On way back to Vancouver, we stopped by Cameron falls and took lotsa silly pics.
Great wee trip to Whistler, glad we stayed a few extra days :)
